Non-British British resident here. You won't go wrong with what Angie recommended. Newcastle is to the north from where I live and thus get even colder than my corner of England, so all I have to say is - wrap up warm. Nice puffer or good coat with high wool content should do the job. Get yourself good, quality boots as well. Hat too. I don't see how you can stand out, apart from maybe sometimes looking too prepared for winter, which does not worry me - I know I AM warm. My experience is that the British still don't take the winter very seriously as the rest of the Europeans do (continental) in terms of what they wear, how the roads are treated (or not) or cars driven, but the last two years are changing that perception rapidly. One more thing, practice walking on icy pavements, it sounds crazy but the cycle of snow falling, then not being cleaned, then frozen overnight, then thawed a bit during the day, then refrozen overnight is probably the worst aspect of the winters here.
There's a cold weather forecasted for the end of this week, so it's probably a good idea to keep an eye on Newcastle to get the idea of what temperatures will be, as that should be the best guideline for you.
