Ask Angie: what kind/color leggings to wear

I'm a young 50-plus and just picked up a great empire waist knit tunic in a dark chocolate brown (so dark it's hard to tell if it's brown or dark charcoal or even black). What color leggings should I wear with it? Unfortunately, I have bad feet and am incapable of wearing heels, so will have to wear flats. Must I go without any sock? Can I wear a sheer nude knee-high? Or will that look dorky? I don't usually do well with boots because it's hard to find a good fit.

Do you think you can show us a link to the dress? By the sounds of things, you can wear black leggings with ballet flats.

Wish I'd looked for the link in the first place! I got this on the sale rack at Urban Outfitters. Clearly, I am COLOR BLIND! The tag says it's black. But I swear it changes in different lights. One reviewer calls it a chalky grey..ANYWAY...it is a dress, but at my age I could never wear it as such; too short. I am a bit of a pear shape, but I am not really overweight -- 5'5" and about 125 pounds. So going under the assumption that it's a greyish black, is it going to be too severe to wear black leggings with it? I'm not sure how to accessorize it either, if at all. I would really appreciate opinions here.

Pemn, your dress looks like it will make a great tunic with black leggings. You have a nice scoop neck that can accommodate a variety of necklaces or scarves. A gold-tone chain with big links would work. If you want something more feminine to contrast with the almost military details on the dress, how about pearls?

I love the idea of skinny jeans, san! Unfortunately, I don't think I could squeeze myself into a pair. They would probably push my stomach up to my esophagus, creating respiratory issues. I can just imagine trying to explain that to the paramedics... Actually, it may be illegal in some states for women of 51 to WEAR skinny jeans. :0 Leggings are a little more forgiving in that they're knit and allow you to at least breathe.

Now my teen daughter is a prime candidate for skinny jeans. Tall, slender with athletic build and legs up to there. But I think she'd laugh her head off if I tried to wear them.

As for a photo of me...dunno if i'm ready for that. I haven't even put the tunic/dress on since I bought it. Will think about that though.

You'd be surprised at us 50+ wearing skinny jeans. There seems to be a style for alot of us even if one persons skinny is another persons straight leg. Give them a try, you might be pleasantly surprised.

Leggings with ruching, zips or buttons might also be worth a try to add a bit of extra interest x

Loulou, i was out last night and actually purchased the leggings with buttons, pretty much identical to those at Marks & Spencer. I do like them very much. (Just wish they were a little tighter (to pull me in!). maybe i'll try spank under them.)

San, you're absolutely right! Lots of 50-pluses can wear skinny jeans -- and wear them well! Sorry I mis-spoke in my generalization. I just don't feel as if I'm one of those who can wear them. And since I'm pear-shaped, I was under the impression that straight legs are not that flattering for me. (So why am I considering leggings, right? Same silhouette. Hm. Maybe it's because the bigger, bottom half of me is covered by tunic, so that makes it less of a problem? ) sorry to ramble on!

one more thing...my bad, hard-to-fit feet won't allow ballet flats. The closest I can come is a black mary jane flat. However, unfortunately, it's not all that sleek; it's a little clunky. Here it is:

I'm also a pear and wear skinnie jeans either witha tunic as you would leggings or with a banded top. If you feel like you'd like to give them a go don't let anything stop you. Can't wait to see your buttoned leggings x

Great tunic! Black leggings with interesting details or skinny jeans wold be my suggestions. Actually, nowadays they also make leggings that look like jeans.
