Ask Angie: What is my body type?

Hi Angie

I've been a longtime lurker at youlookfab and these forums and I am having a lot of trouble identifying my body type. My measurements are 40-36-42, and I've always thought of myself as an hourglass but I'm not sure if that is correct.

I've taken a full body shot here http://i295.photobucket.com/al.....lbody1.jpg but as Tanya pointed out in another topic I'm wearing a tunic top which is a bit loose so it might not give an accurate representation.

Any help you could point my way would be greatly appreciated!

I'd say either hourglass or inverted triangle. Would it annoy you terribly to take another photo in a more form-fitting top ( not necessarily right now, but when you get a chance)?

Maybe Angie can say for sure from this photo tough.

Thank you Aisha! The second picture was very helpful. I’m leaning towards pretty pear, but I’m not sure whether you’re scrunching up your shoulders to take the picture? Your shoulder width looks a little narrower than your hips. Does that make sense to you?

The first photo I was going to say hourglass...but the second photo--I was going to say pear, but maybe with some apple tendencies. I agree with Angie though that it may be teh way you're holding the camera, which is making your shoulders look smaller. (Are you standing up straight?)

You are very cute Aisha--but you surprised me. I was expecting you to look different.

Thanks Angie, I think I am scrunching my shoulders in a bit, I will try and take another picture today to be sure.

Nicole, you are probably right, I probably wasn't standing up as straight as I should be when I took that shot. To me, my shoulders look proportional to my hips and I don't think the picture accurately depicts that.

So Nicole, what did you expect me to look like?

I was fairly sure you were either Indian or Pakistani...but I have an unfair advantage, I suppose.

Aisha is a pretty common South Asian and Middle Eastern name.

As for body type, I think you're an almost-hourglass pear. Your shoulders still look a bit narrower than your hips, but not by a whole lot.

Just a quick question angie, I read your write up on "The Pretty Pear" and you say that pears should aim for a-line skirts and stay away from pencil skirts. I used to always wear a-line skirts but in the last year or so I have started to incorporate a couple of pencil skirts into my wardrobe. The pencil skirts I have are more straight i.e. they go straight from my hips as opposed to staying fitted through the hips. Do you think these are ok? I will post a pic up tomorrow of this look.

By the way Angie, I love your blog! I've been checking in daily for about a year!

Nicole, Aisha is a pakistani name...I was born and raised here but both of my parents were born in pakistan and came over when they were pretty young...

You probably get away with the straighter pencil styles Aisha, but a picture is always appreciated. I have a client with a similar body type to you and she gets away with it if the length and the rest of the ensemble is right.
