Ask Angie: Vintage Winter Sweater - Keep?

I've started closet clean 2016, so for today....here is a Dale of Norway sweater that goes back to the early 1990's!!! It has sentimental value but not sure if I should keep. Your opinion, please

Do you wear it? Does it have a use in your life? Is it in great shape? Do you love? (All questions I ask myself when considering items like this.)

That's a tough one! I think I would like it better if it were longer, almost tunic-y. However, those sweaters really are timeless. And functional, very warm. Do you have occasion to wear it doing any winter sports? ( although now there are so many high tech fabrics if function is important.) if you have the room to keep it, I would. I have Shetland fair isle sweaters from the 80's that I won't part with...but I never wear them.

While these are classic and I still see them worn everywhere here, I confess that I don't really love the look in general. You may feel differently. Otherwise, I think you should keep only if it would be either emotionally devastating or leave a huge wardrobe hole.

I have several Dale of Norway sweaters. Some date to the 90s. They really don't change. This kind of sweater is nice for casual Christmas parties, ice skating, etc. I would keep it, if you like it.

Yes, it is one of the only two sweaters I take with me when I travel to Europe and East Coast, which is yearly and during winter months, so it gets a goods 10 days wear each year. It is warm - with something else on underneath- and my hubby bought it for me. Just not sure if it now looks a bit dated.

I know how you feel about these . Growing up in a competitive Nordic skiing family, these were de rigeuer back in the day. I had one myself, but eventually gave it away . Like many authentic , vintage garments, you have to love them to keep them. Otherwise, it's just another dated , albeit very expensive, sweater. That sounds blunt, I realize.....

If it has a function and you love it, then keep. It sounds as if it is useful to you. It is a bit dated (the cut) ..but the pattern is also timeless. So as forum mate Anna might say -- if you want to wear it for fashion purposes, it's all down to the styling.

I agree with Una that it's fun but not super- lovely seen in isolation ( color, fit). But, do you love it on those 10 days, or wish you had something different ? Are you a vintage-y person who likes knowing this piece has a great history and represents something beyond a generic sweater?
Would you have to go buy a travel capsule sweater snd do you want to? Could you pack it away snd see if you go rooting it out in a sweat of withdrawal?

Useful? yes
Sentimental? yes
Love it? Borderline - what I love is that it is a classic
Do I feel fab? - I feel warm, not really fab

Pop it in your sentimental box, Encore. Keep it, but don't wear it because it doesn't make you feel fab.
