I bought this skirt at a vintage market today and I am in love with it! It is pure 70s and it just speaks to me! I like it with my chunky heeled sandals in the pic and I think I will like it with tall boots as well, but I need some advice and inspiration about what to wear on top.

In the pic, I have it with a cami and little cardi but I'm not happy with it. I tried it with a fitted black shirt tucked in and it was all wrong. I would like to tuck in whatever I wear because I love the waist with the topstitching and chunky buttons.

About me: I'm big busted, short waisted and have broad shoulders. I feel that a turtle neck would look good but they don't usually look great on me.

I would appeciate your advice...and anyone else who might have suggestions. Thank you.

I like what you are wearing here and agree a turtleneck could also be good. I am also short waisted and tucked in can be a bit of a chalkenge, and lower contrast tends to work better as you have done here. Would sleeveless tops work, that may be another option or even an open vest or gullet over the top?

great skirt! i'd love to see it with a white top that would pick up on the stitching/buttons. maybe a simple white tee? maybe a cropped top?

What Mardis said. Would love to see something light colored, wider at shoulders-- either shorter due to being cropped - or an eay- fitting T tucked in. I like that style of skirt, too

That is a great skirt! It's a little hard to tell from the pic if it's black or dark denim. I might suggest looking for a gauzy blouse with a fitted waist so that tucking works. Maybe in a deep color like gold or rust, or a lighter color with some embroidery if you're OK with playing up the 70s.

I just find what you have on to be so flattering. I'm a fan of this silhouette in general though.
What don't you like about the cami/cardi combo?

A turtleneck would look great, but not if that's not your style. This reminds me of one worn by Jane Fonda in "Klute". Very 70's. I love it.

LOVE the skirt! I think it looks good as styled, so I wouldn't hesitate to wear it out like that. But perhaps another choice for a top would be a lightweight, white button-down that you could tie at the bottom. Or maybe this would hide the skirt waist too much?

What a great find! I actually love the deep square neckine created by your cardi-over-cami combo--how about looking for a fitted tee with that sort of neckline? (Back in the '70s we wore scoop-necked leotards under skirts like this.) Red & white stripes would be perfect for Summer, and wedge-soled espadrilles that tie around the ankles would look really fab.

I think it looks great as is and would also look good as tulle suggests. I would perhaps shorten the skirt just a little bit -- still leaving it long midi-length.

Gorgeous piece. Like Suz, I would consider shortening just a tiny bit to show some ankle. Works here anyway!

Suz makes a very good point about the length: Shortening the skirt by a couple of inches would bring it from purely vintage to today, show off the slenderest part of your legs above the ankle, and get rid of the hem-wrinklling that often plagues vintage clothes. Try pinning it up a bit and see what you think!

From the photo, I like the styling, but otherwise would look for fitted or semi fitted tops.

I love some of your ideas and I'm going to have a play next weekend when I have a bit of time.

The skirt is actually black, but it's the type of black that could look almost charcoal when paired with something very black (if that makes sense). The cami/cardi combo did that, and I didn't really like it. It somehow felt wrong, maybe too fussy?

I'll try it with a couple of very simple tops first, v neck, scoop and turtleneck (with a minimiser bra). I like the idea of a blouse, but I don't have anything that would suit. The same goes for something in a lighter colour...but just about everything I have is grey/black/dark colours. Perhaps I need to investigate some of my boxes in the attic. Who knows what I could find up there.

Suz, I don't think I could bear to take up the hem, although I do see your point. Perhaps I could pin it and see. I actually don't want to lose the vintage look though.
