Ask Angie: This red JCrew sweater?

Angie, I've been eyeing this cashmere tunic in the JCrew sales section. Do you have any hands-on knowledge of it? The color looks right on trend and is gorgeously autumnal, and I need more sweaters. It's final sale, still a bit pricey at 30% off, but I've been putting it in and out of a shopping cart for weeks. Would love your thoughts.

It is absolutely gorgeous. If you need sweaters, I would seriously consider it. I'll come back to see what other YLFers have to say because I could use a new sweater as well.

It looks more orangy red than burgundy to me, Vivian. How do you wear burnt orange and rust colors? For myself I would prefer to see the color in person before committing to a final sale on such expensive sweater.
Colors are so hard to see online!

I haven't seen it, Vivian. Jumper looks gorgeous, but unless you are sure of the size, I am always hesitant to purchase final sale without trying it on first.

I agree with Sveta.....this sweater looks more orange red than burgundy. The shape does look nice on the model but it is a lot to spend if you don't like it for whatever reason. I'd rather pay full price knowing I can exchange if necessary.

Makes me think of paprika! Beautiful, rich color.
I'm no help because I can't evaluate size online unless I've tried on the specific item. Even when they show sizing, I can't tell, hmm, sized for tailored fit, fluid fit, oversized..who knows? In one retailer I've purchased tops from XS to L and in petite or regular. Even belts drive me crazy. So I need to be able to return, even if I had to pay a small penalty in postage.

I've been thinking about this sweater as well. I haven't been able to see it in person, but I did see another cashmere sweater in this same color this weekend, and it is definitely closer to a heathered rust color than burgundy. Also, I emailed J.Crew for exact measurements, and the chest circumference on a small is 53.5 inches, so it is quite oversized. For anyone contemplating items from J.Crew that you haven't been able to see in person, they can almost always give you the garment measurements if you email them. Hope this helps!

Thanks everyone. I am close to purchasing. I understand all of the hesitation around final sale, and if it weren't JCrew I would not even consider it. But I am an extremely consistent Small at JCrew -- never an XS and never a M. And I buy a lot from JCrew. I really never have to exchange for size, and I don't size up (for slouch, or whatever). (Although I do return because I don't like an item; that is true.)

SkiDiva, your take on the color is really helpful since you saw it in person, and I really appreciate that. Heathered rust, while not the burgundy I expected, sounds like it would still be a good color on me and also one I would love to pair with my deep pink pea coat, so that is actually making me more interested rather than less.

Right now I am planning to spin by a JCrew to see an item in that color in the next day or two to be sure about it before I pull the plug. Unfortunately, according to the online SA, there is no store in the US that has this sweater in this color in stock! So I will have to do some imagining. I'm hoping that in the next couple of days they might increase the % off to 40, since they really have to move that clearance stock ... plus, I have a $25 giftcard, which will bring down the price a bit more.

SkiDiva, let me know if you decide to get this sweater! And if I do, I will post pictures -- I hope, happy ones -- when it arrives.

Here are three questions to ask yourself before you buy anything: Does it fit? Does it flatter? Do I love it?
Fit: Do the shoulder seams line up with your shoulders, does the waistline taper in to show your womanly figure, does the hem hit at the desired length? Move around in it, could you drive a car comfortably, and what happens when you sit down and cross your legs? (More appropriate for a skirt or slacks, of course.)
Flatter: Does the color make your skin glow and your eyes sparkle? Does it enhance your figure and make you look terrific?
Love: Does this item feel like it represents the real you, from the inside out? Does it go with and add to the looks and style that you'd like to project. Do you feel like saying "Yes, this is ME, this is how I want the world to see me?"
