Hi Angie,

I've been reading and enjoying your blog for the past several years. I LOVE your website and your fashion sense! Thank you!

I am now a full time college professor and a nursing mom, and I'm having trouble finding professional and "cool" outfits that still work with nursing. I'm in the arts (music) so don't have to wear a suit every day, but I do still need at least business casual for most days. Add in that being a college professor doesn't exactly bring in the big bucks - I am looking for clothes on a budget.

Any advice is appreciated!

Not Angie. But I have some tops from here that were very comfortable and flattering:

Other than that, I chose tank tops and interesting cardigans for nursing in.

dorea, it's been a couple of years since I breastfed, but at the time I remember finding nice tops that didn't break the bank at Old Navy and Gap. And sometimes, I also found it was easier to wear a loose-fitting top and nurse under it (sort of using it as a cover--in combination with a pashmina-type of scarf) rather than a top made specifically for nursing. So maybe tunics and skinnies + scarf that can double as nursing cover could be a good combo?

Some jersey nursing tops are great. I actually found some good ones from motherhood and a brand called Milk. Button front tops are great as well. Good for you continuing to nurse/pump! It can be a challenge but is well worth it. I used to pump in the bathroom of our clinic where I worked, not great but that was the only option I had then!

I've found that button up shirts and tank tops under cardigans are the easiest to nurse in. A top/sweater that you pull up also works but I find the bunched up fabric under my chin gets in the way. I think it partly depends on how proficient you are. You didn't say if you are pumping during the day but I've found that a little easier to dress for since you don't have the complication of the baby getting in the way.

Hopefully Natalie (Goldenpig) chimes in, I'm a bit far from when this applied to me. I recall having shirts that were long torso and a size up to accomodate the different size. Wraps (tops, dresses etc..) are great. It may have changed, but in my day (5 years ago) most nursing tops were not very fashionable no matter how you tried to style it.
