Ask Angie: Sweater Dress Closet Storage

I purchased jcrew's "belted midi sweater dress with pleated skirt". It's wool and nylon. What is the best way to store it in the closet? If you google it you can see what it looks like.

I chatted with them and they think it is fine to hang it on a padded hanger as normal. Right now I have it on one of my uline foam hangers that you posted about once. Hanging does seem best for the pleated skirt. I thought I would take it off the hanger and put it in a plastic sweater box when the weather gets warm again. Just wanted to check with you about it. Thank you.

Can you fold it over a hanger, instead? Like a pair of pants, and fold the sleeves up too. That's what I would do.

It has a thick waist band but does fold over an L shaped pants hanger. The hanger is not padded but I"ll look on amazon to see if they have some. It also fits onto a flocked hanger with a bar that pants can hang on. Both hangers in the past have left marks that have to be steamed out before wearing. I don't think those types of hangers come more padded. It is important to fold the sleeves up too. With the first hanger, I think it could fall off if it got jostled in the closet. I'll have to look to see now if there are padded pant hangers.

I ordered a set of the "Absolutely Perfect open end trouser hangers". They are non-slip and foam coated. I hope they will be softer than the few we have. Review said no creases. Maybe this will work, Thank you very much for your suggestion.

It’s a beautiful dress! I knit and wear a lot of knitted items. With the pleating, I like Angie’s suggestion to fold it over a padded hanger at the waist. Even though it contains nylon, hanging it from the shoulders is a fair amount of weight to place on the shoulders. (I’m a big believer and practicer of storing most woolen knitwear flat, and occasionally folded in half over a hanger.)

Yes, that is the dress. I got the charcoal. I was able to get it for $84 with one of their sales. I agree that it's best to hang it from the waist rather than the shoulders. I found a pants hanger on The Container Store after my post and decided to try it instead because the bar looked fatter although it's not foam coated. Reviews said no creases. So I canceled Amazon's order. I'll try the container store when it finally comes and can use it for other things in our closet if it doesn't work. Angie, I heard that somewhere that the modesty look in dresses was somewhat in style again so the dress does have that style. I guess there's a way to reply individually to comments but decided to do it this way.

Hanger hack to create a rounded, foam surface.........You can use a skinny pool noodle or buy a piece of pipe insulation at Home Depot/Lowe's. Cut to size and slip it on. If using an enclosed hanger, split it up the length to insert over the bar (pipe insulation is already split to fit over pipes). You could also use an empty paper towel roll in a pinch.

Bonnie....Yes! Easy Peasy. I like the idea of pipe insulation because it comes in different diameters for various pipe sizes. And, it's already split.
