Ask Angie: Suggestions for fitted boots for a muscular calf

Hi Angie,

Thanks for the blog about 10 fitted boots for skinny calves....but us gals with "muscular" calves....have a similar problem. My calves are 15 1/2 inces from years of gymnastics. I honestly cannot find a beautiful pair of black riding boots that look good with skirts/dresses and jeans....Suggestions please!!!!

Luxlady, my FAVORITE fitted, just-below-knee-length riding boots are the Rockport Ainly boots. I have a pair in congac that forum member Tarzy recommended - I think I got them in 2008? - and they are still going strong. I lucked out and found them on Amazon for $55, but ever since then I've seriously considered duplicating them in black.

Clarks also has some good options for boots in around a 15" calf circumference. I have a pair of the Clarks Cardy boots - they are a tad too snug for me now that I've gained some weight and my calves are fuller than they were *sad face*, but I've been looking at some other options: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr.....=679481011

I feel your pain. My calves are "only" 13.5 but I have endured the eye-rolling of sales people as I tried on tall boots in stores. Sigh...

Even if you don't buy there, there is some interesting information about fitting boots there.

My solution so far is trifold:

1. One pair of Franco Sarto stretch boots. (Not leather) They are older so are not online now but they're the cousins of the boots Angie recently recommended: http://youlookfab.com/store/20.....etch-boot/

2. One pair of Clark's that have a stretch panel in the back: http://www.amazon.com/Clarks-W.....038;sr=1-7

3. A pair of Timberland boots that have an adjustable buckle at the top of the calf; on the widest hole it fits with jeans; on the narrowest it fits with tights.

In other words, adjustability is key to making it work.

Ah! A 16 inch circumference is probably what you are looking for. Or, a 15.5 inch with elastic insets on the calf area,

These are are fairly easy to find. Perhaps what's more tricky is getting the shaft height right. What is your height luxlady?

Hi Angie, I am 5 feet 7 inches. All the "wide" boots are usually too wide to wear with tights but are great with jeans. I would love to find a pair to go with both!

Generally boots that fit with jeans tucked it will be too wide with tights, unless it's over 1/2 elastic. The consensus here is you need two pairs of boots, one for skirts and dresses and one for boots.

Found the perfect pair! ECCO Hobart Buckle 25 MM boots! They fit my calves perfectly, they loosen to tuck in jeans and tigten the buckles for tights!

Fantastic!! They are beautiful, too. I've been eyeing them, not that I need a pair just like that, but you know...and I saw Nordstrom's had some on sale last week. Can't wait to see you in them!
