Ask Angie: straight/wide leg dressy pants

I am a professional lurker around here but after yesterday's post on trends that should go mainstream I have to ask: Angie, how about straight leg and wide leg loose fitting dressy pants? Still in or should I donate or alter them, tapering down the leg? Reason I ask is I am moving and taking the opportunity to review my wardrobe. I have purged bags and bags of clothes but am still holding on to pants that look like this:

Oh, dress code at work is business casual – no denim.

Not Angie, but I think that type of pant is a classic and if you are able to wear it PPL (perfect pants length) it is a wonderful change up from slimmer silhouettes. If you love them, wear them.

Not Angie, but I am seeing lots of pants like this being worn right now. Unfortunately, most I see are too short to be PPL. You might try a pair that is too short to wear full length altered to taper to the ankle like roomy track pants, and wear with heels or at least a bit of heel or wedge to work.

Lili, it truly depends on how they fit. That will determine whether they are dated or current. Perhaps you can post a photo of you wearing them?

I have pants like the pininterest post that I wear. I am pretty fringy. I never stopped wearing wide legged pants. Sarah Pacini (a Belgium designer) always has some in her collections.

Suz, Joy, thank you for your comments. As a long time YLF reader I am always conscious of PPL. I am also purging shoes and a black low heel point toe bootie is on my list for that very reason. I tend to like these trousers best when the point of the shoes peak out.

Style Fan, I feel that way too: always fringy and a later adopter of new trends. Thanks for pointing me to Sarah Pacini - I thoroughly enjoyed her lookbooks!

Angie, thanks for answering (here and on the blog comment). I can definitely see what you mean... I am terribly camera shy but I will try and take pics from the waist down (blushing).

I love a good wide leg trouser! I'm particularly fond of Kate Hepburn style trousers -- drapey and high waisted. For me, ease in pants is more important even than silhouette. Many wide leg pants from recent years have been fitted in the hip, but wide in the leg. Newer looks seem to me to drape more through the hip, bum and rise. I'm doubly aware of this because this fit is so hard to find on a curvy figure!

Posting a pic --- even a waist down one --- would give you the best answer to your question, of course. Best wishes on your purge and move!
