Ask Angie: Skittles, small busts, and problematic thighs

Hi, I'm new around here. I'm not quite sure what my body type is. Here are my meausurements,

Bust: 33
Waist: 25 or 26
Hips: 35

I wear 32b, so I'm small up top. My thighs (and calves) have always been a problem area and I've got some love handles, so I was thinking maybe I'm a skittle?

Questions about small busts: What tops look best on a small bust? Empire waists, scoopnecks, v-necks are out, right? Are baby doll tops alright for a small bust? What about when the pleating is above/on the bust line?

Last question: Since my thighs and calves are a problem area, I don't look good in skinny jeans. What styles fit big thighs and calves? Wide leg? What about straight leg?

Some more info would help, such as : What is the width of your shoulders relative to your hips? Do you wear the same size on top and bottom? A photo would be even more helpful.

I have very similar measurements to you ( 32C, and my hips are 37") and Angie helped me figure out that I am an hourglass.

As for tops for small chests, details like ruffles, pleating, ruching, breast pockets etc. help a lot. You can do crew-necks, boat-necks, even V-necks, especially if you wear a cami underneath. The only cut I would avoid are really big scoop-necks, but higher ones are OK. And I believe that empire waists actually look very good on small chest, since they draw the eye there.

I find it hard to believe based on your measurements that your thighs are that large. In general booutcuts/flares would work. Wide-legs would depend on your height, they could make short people look stumpy. And I think skinny jeans would still be OK if worn with proper-longer length tops and higher heels.

Welcome Veronica and thank you for the compliment! Thanks for the info and Tanya has started you off on a good track. (Clever Tanya and we share the same Chantelle bra size btw).

It sounds like you might be a little hard on yourself wrt the size of your thighs. It’s best to post a picture of yourself like the others have done so that we can make the right body type assessment. Tanya thought she was pear-shaped when she was hourglass. Shoulder width plays a huge role. Also, are you sure you’re a 32B? When were you last correctly fitted for a bra? And how tall are you?

Thanks for the replies! I probably am a little hard on myself about my thighs. I wear the same size on top and bottom, but sometimes a size larger on bottom, and my shoulders are an inch or two wider than my hips.

I'm 5'2 and I was fitted a couple of months ago. I was measured a 32a, but when I tried 32a on, my chest bulged out of the top of the bra (very uncomfortable). So I tried on 34a, 34b, 32b and 32b fit best.

You sound very similar to me Veronica! Except I'm busty. 32DD, 26, 36, and I too have big thighs. I am also 5'2, and sometimes wear a size bigger on the bottom.

You look hourglassy to me. If you have a small chest, a higher neckline is best. You can definitely wear an empire top, cru necks, boatnecks, slash necklines, funnel necks and turtlenecks. Basically any high neckline is fair game for you. I think a shallow v and scoop is fine, especially with a cami.

Yes, I'd say hourglass too. And you do not have big thighs at all. I think you're very well proportioned. Was your bra fitting at Victoria Secret, by any chance? They don't do a very good job at it.

Yeah, my fitting was at VS. I'm going to try Nordstrom. I always thought hourglasses were more voluptuous (think Nigella Lawson)?

Please go to Nordies, or a specialist lingerie shop for a bra fitting, Veronica. It’s worth it. VS is a joke unless you’re a noddy-body teenybopper.

I'm an hourglass and I'm not voluptuous at all. Nigella Lawson is extremely voluptuous and as pear-shaped as can be.

Veronica - Re the "skittle" thing. I have said elsewhere that I really identified with that body type and I can see why you would too. It seems to me that it is on the cusp between Angies' hourglass and pear shape - sort of in proportion with regard to hip and shoulder width, but having bigger thighs. (Depending on how you do the measurements - the thighs might be included in a hip width measurement) But you are definately more towards the hourglass side.
Angie - do you agree with Tanya about jeans recommendations?

I do Anne! I think that wide leg pants are trickier to wear than one might expect and height is a prerequisite.
