Ask Angie: Sizing of the J.Crew Tuxedo Shirt

Hi Angie,
I'm thinking of ordering the tuxedo shirt you recommended, but I'm not familiar with J.Crew sizing. What do you think would be best for me? I'm a 4 or 6P in most BR pieces (I have a few). If I go by the size chart I should choose 6 in J.Crew.

It runs TTS, Ingunn. I LOVE THIS SHIRT! I am buying another white one soon. (I'm still sobbing that the light blue is sold out in my size).

I do worry about one thing for you, though. The fit around the torso is very roomy and waist surrendering. It is gorgeously tailored on the shoulder, bust and hip. But the rest of the fit is boyish. I know you prefer waist-defining styles.

Not that I don't think you'd look great in this shirt! Just giving you a heads up

OF COURSE I don't mind sharing

It's really sofy AND crisp. Like Egyptian cotton bed sheets. Creases easily and feels a little "wet" because the thread count is so high. It's not a starched shirt crisp like the non-iron variety.

Thanks! I've learned that if a blouse is super soft I seem to be able to wear it even in the heat without feeling too confined. I have a super soft black tuxedo shirt I got years ago from the Gap and never wore it until just recently (thanks again to YLF). For some dumb reason I thought it was too "dressy" to wear with jeans (naming conventions again, me thinking "tuxedo shirt" must be for dressier occasions) - anyway, turns out it looks and feels great with jeans. One of my happier outfits lately. And I didn't get a photo - but I'll wear again soon.

Btw, I used to live in very hot tropical climates (Hong Kong and Cape Town) and have found covering up with loose cotton/silk/linen sleeved shirts a great formula. My Mum taught me to do that and she was spot on.

Thank you, Angie, and even more so with the additional questions from Tex! I like the idea of a more statement-ish white shirt, because I only have ONE basic white button down, and that is just not enough. You mention that it is roomy, and I appreciate your concern I think a semi-tuck or a tuck will give the waist definition I'm after, and even a loose fit is fine with narrow trousers and skirts.

I'm modeling the size 4 black and white gingham tuxedo shirt in my K/R thread, if that helps. You can see the total waist surrendering (I'm very much an hourglass).

Yes! I have ordered it! But it is still in transit, so I haven't seen it yet. When it's here, I'll post a photo for you. I ordered a size 4, and I'm confident that this will be the right size for me.
