Ask Angie: Sizing for high waisted jeans

Angie,
I'm really loving going back to high waisted jeans, but being the apple shape that I am, do I go up a size or stay the same size? I just got a pair of Paige high waisted jeans in my usual size and while they fit perfectly everywhere else, they feel a little tight in the waist. I thought I'd try wearing them around the house to see if they stretch to a bit, but I was wondering what your take is?

I would suggest going up a size and see if you would like them tailored. I do this all the time. The fit after the tailor is lovely.
A tailor can always size down but not up.

Are you sure you weren't trying on jeans designed for a curvy figure? That could account for the waist being smaller.

Thanks for the input--I wore them a bit, they stretched out a little to be comfortable, and I realized that I'm not used to anything at my waist anymore! I had to adjust to the feel!

It is definitely a different feeling! The feel of a new type of fit can be quite something to get used to. I still remember how bizarre low-rise jeans felt the first time I tried them back around 2000. I'm glad these worked out for you after all.

Yep glad they worked out. Remember to wash on cold and hang to dry. So they won't shrink if they are form fitting.

Glad to know they're working for you. I have some new jeans that feel snug at first, but soon stretch to fit. I'm so glad I sized down per other reviews so I'd have the proper size. It's hard to know how comfortable something is going to be if we only wear it for a minute just to try it on, though I'd say the exception is shoes. If shoes don't feel good from the get go, I pass on them. My fussy feet call the shots.

I ALWAYS sit in new jeans/pants with the tags on for an hour or so. Usually they give enough to be comfortable. Sometimes they stretch too much!
Another tip for a too tight waistband on jeans is to stretch them when they come out of the wash. They will stretch a bit when wet if you firmly tug on them all the way around the waistband. Denim is a very durable fabric so it doesn't hurt them.

I often find the waistband stretches out the least, compared to the seat, thighs and calves, so I have to be super careful about counting on the jeans growing to fit me. When I get especially exasperated about this I just fall back on boyfriend cuts, where a little more ease here or there can work.
