Ask Angie: Prioritizing purchases as a grad student

Hi Angie,

I am a grad student approaching 30, and will probably graduate within the next 3 years. I have recently become interested in fashion, and am trying to streamline my wardrobe, choosing quality over quantity, trying to look as professional/chic as I can in minimalist footwear. Given my student income, it would horrify those close to me to know the amount I am willing to spend on a good handbag, trench, etc. My rationale is that if these items are indeed well-made and timeless, doesn't it make more sense to take the financial hit now and get a good many years of them at this age, then to be prudent financially, wait until I have a secure job, etc.? I'm torn between the two approaches and was wondering what you'd recommend and what kind of purchases you'd prioritize. Oh, and I really enjoyed the article where you recommend focusing spending on accessories, but I thought'd throw this question out anyway. Thanks!

P.S. One of the blazers that I purchased was from J. Crew and had a missing button within 4 wears. Given the price of the garment, I was extremely disappointment with the workmanship, hence my asking now about brands like Mulberry and Burberry.

I don't think going up to designer brands is necessarily going to guarantee you better quality, especially given limited income. Maybe Angie or others can chime in on how to spot quality *craftsmanship*? Or, shop at Nordstrom and Anthropologie and other stores with return policies that allow you to take back worn items if the quality doesn't hold up.

Hi KL,

I mentioned those two brands specifically because I had read good reviews about their policies/products. I don't find Anthropologie products to well-made and I find the stores smell like cheap dye. They have very pretty and unique items, though. And the tip about return policies is useful--thanks!

Great question!

Shoes, bags, coats, jackets, specs and your haircut are where I suggest my clients spend a little more money - *if* they can afford it. This does not have to mean Burberry or Prada! It can mean AT instead of Forever 21. Or Aerosoles instead of Payless.

Does that give you a starting point?

Great suggestions from Angie! I have to add, no plastic shoes or bags EVER (unless you are vegan of course). They simply do not last.

I've actually worked my way up the chain, from Smartset in Canada, Reitmans, Anthropologie, AT, J.Crew--and my dissatisfaction--I'm not super picky, honest --with the cuts/materials/dyes/workmanship has led me to considering items from Burberry or Mulberry. I'm looking at it as more of an ending up point, short of learning how to design and make my own clothes (not a realistic option). I'd want to know that the quality and design of garments/bags from Burberry/Mulberry specifically are worth their price or if I am merely paying for the name.
