Ask Angie: Platforms Outdated?

In a recent FB post you mentioned that platforms are starting to look outdated.

I'm feeling slightly panicked because I have trouble with most heels, but need the height - I find platform sandals to be the most comfortable option for my very fussy feet.

I usually do my own thing and don't worry too much about trends, but I don't want to look totally out of date. Can I still wear sandals such as the ones below?

I have these kind of shoes from last summer and I am excited to wear them again!
I think it's these kind of platforms that have had their day.

Claudia is right - as she so often is! And sandals and booties with high platforms seem to be on their way out. Your sandals barely have a platform, Tara. And that's a classic silhouette these days. No worries at all

Rita's linked to the type of platform that has had it's day. The writing was on the wall last year already, as shows were showcasing more and more refined footwear. NYFW. that has just passed (onto London now!), and there was barely a platform in sight - and there were hundreds of shows. I've watched them all!

That said FLATforms are still trending.

Current shoe direction: refined, ultra modern, POINTY, flat and lower heels, booties, shooties, tall dressy boots with heels, loafers, oxfords, classic severe pumps, peep-toes.

Elisabeth, severe pumps are a la Emmanuelle Alt. Very pointy and with thin heels.

Oh, thank goodness it's not all platforms. I personally could not live without my big chunky heel platforms. Sometimes one needs to be 3 inches taller and that's the only way for me to do it! I guess that is kind of a funky, retro-ish style that's not really too influenced by current trends though, or at least I hope so.

Angie what about wedge heels? My hunch is that a proper heel is more trendy than a wedge heel at this point, but wedge heels are surviving because I think shoppers like them. (Myself definitely included.) For a high heel shoe to be walkable and comfortable without a wedge, it needs to be extremely well constructed, like the Rag & Bone Newbury. Whereas the wedge heel can be a cheaper shoe but still quite comfortable. (My DV wedge heeled oxfords from 2011 still going strong, still wearing them several times a week -- a good example.)

So I think we're safe with our wedge heeled sandals for a while Tara. Check these out:

Compared to last year, I also notice more sandals with baby wedges (under 2") which makes me so happy.

Yeah, I can use the extra height sometimes but can't deal with standard spike heels. I'll be wearing my platform wedges sandals for awhile yet!

I jumped on the cork platform sandal trend only last year. They are cute and comfy. I didn't pay a lot for them, but I too was really looking forward to wearing them soon!

Please understand the difference between the platform styles, ladies!

Fashionable platform sandals - the trendy styles that many fashion bloggers have been wearing for about 3 years - are starting to look dated. But that does NOT include the type of mini platform sandal that Tara linked to. (The sandal style that Clarks makes every year and sells millions of). THAT has become a classic, and is not dated at all. It's styles with a high front platform noses that have *virtually* seen their day.

Denise, you are spot on about wedges - and refined wedges are very on trend. Some of the styles you linked to in shopbop actually look quite dated to me - and I popped them in below - #1 to #4.

BUT! To your point, people will still wear them because things take a while to faze out. AND, if they sell at a retail level, buyers will still pop them into stores because the fashion industry is all about making money.

#5 to #8 are much more the direction of things to come.

What an interesting thread ! So much wealth of information here. Wedges are by far my favorite type of shoes and am so glad that they are still on trend. I actually like the aesthetics of #5-#8 much better than #1-#4 anyway. And the heel height in #6 is perfect!

I am so glad to hear this, as platform pumps have been on a down-trend in my head for a while now. They just feel done... overdone. And while I am not a huge fan of pointy toes, I realize those also trend. Moderately pointy to almond is always classic to me, but the "witch toe" extremes things went to last time pointy toes trended was a bit absurd.

Baby wedges make me so happy! I never wear anything over 2 inches, wedge or not, no matter how unstylish low heels are. My feet, knees and back just can't do it.

I remember having platforms on under my Gunny Sax dress in 8th grade graduation and knowing they were definitely not stylish anymore Funny how that sticks out in my head.
I will wear my Lucky Abeo's until they fall apart, though! I know they are high, but I find them contoured enough to 'pass'. Lol.
