Ask Angie: Plaid skinnies

I bought the red Tripp plaid pants (after much struggle, a whole other story) to satiate my not-so-inner punk. But after receiving them I feel like they are a bit too dark since it's only red and black, so I've been waffling about them (they fit better now that I'm a bit smaller). After seeing that Modcloth has something similar with a lighter tartan in both red and blue I'm wondering if maybe one of those might be better for me. What would you suggest? Thanks!

Not too dark at all! Love this tartan, Aida! It's rich and yummy with black, white and blue.

Wonder if they are just a tad too snug. I am a little phobic about tartan skinnies looking overly tight. But they could be just fine too.

Hi Aida, obviously not Angie but just wanted to say I LOVE the ones you have already. I do like the pair in #3 as well but without seeing them on you is tricky to compare.

I particularly like the size of the plaid on #1/2 and the boldness of the black and red.
I realise the style of plaid in #3/4 is maybe more 'on trend'?

I look forward to hearing what Angie thinks.

Hi Aida! I really like your pants in the posed shot (#2), so cute with those flats! However in the head-on pics, it bothers me that the lines of plaid don't run straight up and down your legs, KWIM? I think the light shirt and jacket work with them to brighten the darkness, but the Modcloth one's look a bit less wintery I guess. Can you still return the red/black ones? Oh, and congrats on your shrinkage! You look great!

Angie, thanks for the quick reply! They were a bit too snug on the thigh when I took the photos a month ago but I think they are fine now. I will keep these, and get them shortened a bit (they're super long) and the back of the waist band taken in (it's pretty gapey). Yay!

Deborah, I was particularly drawn to the blue pair but I don't think I can swing two pairs of tartan skinnies, hehe!

Claire, I see what you're saying about the lines; part of that was the pants being snug and part of that is the legs being too long and so everything gets all shifty. They do feel wintery to me too, I think that was my issue. I will have to keep my eyes out for a springier printed pant that appeals to me (no floral pants here)!

I think they look great and I didn't notice tightness (and anyhow you say they are looser now). I love them with the black shoes too. Perfect.

I like them on you Aida! I think they are seasonless. With a white tee and tough sandals, they look just right for summer. (Can't remember if you get hot summers though.)

The ones you bought are nice, but I'd like to see them styled with more black. I personally like the plaid of the others a wee better, but not so much I'd tell you to return and rebuy if the fit may not be the same.

I love plaid stuff, so I am all over these! I do notice the way the pattern is placed on the front, thanks to eagle-eyed Claire, but it doesn't seem to be a dealbreaker :). These suit your style so much--can't wait to see how you style them! I would love a plaid jacket, or coat, or pants, or anything really, so I will live out my plaid love vicariously through you.

Aida, I'm so glad you bought these tartans and they embrace your style. I also like the smaller plaid, in red, in photo 3, because of the additional colors in the pattern and some weird sense that they may reach through to several seasons. Congrats on the better fit!

Thanks for all the GREAT feedback ladies, I really appreciate it! I tried them on again this morning and the vertical line issue Claire pointed out is certainly diminished now, but I don't think it'll ever fully go away because regardless of weight I'll always have full thighs/seat and I'm OK with that

Denise, I like that styling idea! Our summers don't get very hot (just for a short while) so these could definitely be worn year round.

JJ, I'll try styling them with more black, but I generally don't like wearing all-dark outfits (makes me gloomy!) which is part of why I was concerned that these were too dark for me. What do you think of pairing with light pieces like this but add more black in accessories (shoes, jewelry, watch, etc.)?

Jonesy, I feel like you should have ALL of those plaid items you listed (Hmm now that you mention it I think _I_ have all of those plaid items!)

Vicki, that was what I was thinking as well but was a little concerned that the lighter red was a bit more juvenile punk whereas I liked that these had a more sophisticated (*giggle*) darker punk palette. I'm just going to embrace their darkness!
