Ask Angie: Packing for Seattle-Memorial Day wknd

I know you tend to feel colder than others, just like I do. So I thought you are the best person to advise me. We are planning a 4 day trip to Seattle during the Memorial Day weekend and I want to plan and pack appropriately. What kind of weather can I expect? We will be outdoors, exploring, most of the time and my threshold for 'chillness' is pretty low. Anything below mid-70's and I need a topper - atleast a light cardigan (Hey...I am from South India and used to tropical weather almost all year long!) I live in the Bay Area and I need to layer from mid-fall to mid-spring.

Bumpity bump!

I used to live in Vancouver (similar weather). I would definitely bring a rainproof or rain resistant coat (maybe both, depending on your activities planned). A fairly lightweight leather or pleather jacket if you have one could be good, too, or a fabric blazer. Some lightweight knits like light cashmere or merino. Jeans and booties or sneakers (or whatever good walking shoes are, for you). You could also bring some more open shoes in case of better weather.

I live in Seattle, and I'm sorry to say it, but the weather is very unpredictable. It could be cold and rainy, or sunny and warm. I agree with Suz, you should definitely bring a waterproof rain coat and an umbrella. Also, wearing layers is helpful. That way you can add a layer if you get cold, or take one off if things warm up. And yes to cashmere. I wear cashmere (especially cardis) at least through June.

Chicagoan here, but I think traveling with at least two pair of all-day comfort shoes is crucial to enjoying a weekend trip. Switching from one pair to another can help keep feet fresh as well as provide "style variety."

Seattle resident here. Late May can still be chilly, 50's-60's.
Define outdoors? Walking about the city or hiking in the mountains?
If hiking, you'll need fleece and Gore-tex.
In the city you you'll need layers.

Summer usually doesn't consistently arrive until after 7/4, though there are one-off warm days earlier. We typically have rain for all the major holidays...at least that's how the campers tend to remember it. But watch the forecasts right before you leave for the current info...it will be the best source.

You always need to layer in Seattle. And I do not wear sandals. Ever. I can't handle cold feet. Or cold anything for that matter. I do much better in tropical weather like you, Nidhi.

Thanks everyone! Those are great tips! Annagybe - By outdoors, I meant lots of time walking in the city. So I will definitely be taking Beth Ann's advice on packing comfy footwear.
Classically Casual - Yes, definitely intend to look out for the forecasts but my OCD mind starts putting vacation outfits together the moment the tickets are booked
Angie, I end up with near-frozen toes in such weather too. So oxfords and ballet flats it is!
