I've seen these short pleated skirts in a few places

I remember it was either last year or the year before you said no to me in pleated leather skirt in this style.

I agree that it depends on how it's worn. I do think that this might be a style that you can't cheap out on though - I think cheaper fabrics are going to make it look like a cheerleader skirt.

I made the mistake of buying a short pleated skirt at BR a couple of summers ago. It's really difficult to avoid the cheerleader look, and even if I manage it I always feel like it's a too young (for me) look.

That said, this particular skirt looks much more chic than mine, and styled as it is in the photo it is certainly a more mature/urban/cool look.

There are lots of very stylish Japanese ladies in Japan wearing short pleated skirts at your age Anna, but they are shorter than you are (point number one), and wear the length a little longer (point number two). Those details make the difference.

A very short pleated leather skirt is not a style I would suggest you purchase. A longer pleated leather skirt - for sure and with my blessing.

Anna, you come across taller than that because you are long limbed. It's one of the reasons you integrate flats so easily into your outfits. Ladies in Japan are virtually all petite. 5ft to 5ft 2 is a common height. Petites wear shorter skirts (not micro minis) extremely well and up to an older age. Somehow the shorter height takes away the juvenile factor.

I remember wearing skirts like this in high school. As such, I am biased against thinking they are for the young.

Anna, don't do it. I wore a shorty pleated skirt like this the last time they were popular, in the mid-90s. I wore it with opaque black tights and a black sweater and thought I looked great. And maybe I would have, downtown. But I lived in midtown and I was harassed so badly by every taxi driver going by that I ran into the Gap and bought the first skirt I could grab. Never again.

I think I can count on one hand the number of times I've been catcalled. It just doesn't happen to me, and I lived in the Bronx for a year even.
I know my style has shifted somewhat but I haven't figured out wear I'm going. So I'm putting out fashion feelers.

My first association was also cheerleaders, FWIW. A touch longer solves that, though, as Angie mentioned.

Um, I am here to tell you 5'7" is tall. I really like that skirt, but I am a pipsqueak. Actually I have a black chiffon mini that I haven't worn in the last year cause I just wasn't sure about it. I also have a white ruffled one back home. Once they fit again I will have to test them out.

I think the style isn't so much young as fashion forward. But I think they make everyone look like they're doing the Heidi climb up the mountain (whereupon Heidi wears all her clothes to carry them up, for lack of a suitcase).
