Ask Angie: Mother of the Groom during the day

My son is getting married next month. It is a daytime wedding. I have no idea what is considered to be proper attire. Any advice? Should I wear a knee length dress? Is black off limits?

I would check with your DIL to be, to see if there are colours she would like you to choose from & how formal it will be

Congratulations on your son's wedding. I would avoid a black dress. Maybe you can ask the bride's mother what she plans to wear to get an idea of what is expected.

I would do as Caro and Joy suggest; first talk to your DIL to be and possibly her mother, about the venue, the dressiness level, etc. I suspect a knee-length dress would be ideal; as for colour and level of formality, that might depend on their wishes and the type of wedding.

Also, where are you located geographically? This might help us figure out what styles would work for your climate.

I am uncomfortable with the idea of black at a day wedding. This could be an old fashioned idea though so most definitely defer to others in the forum.

I love the idea of a shorter length though.

By all means check with the bridal couple first, as per Caro's suggestion. If it's a dressy wedding, go for a shorter dress. If it's informal, you have more options.

I have worn black and white to a day wedding before - and finished off the look with red shoes and clutch. I don't think it's inappropriate to wear black to a day or evening wedding.
