Ask Angie: Most Versatile Color for Converse?

Hi,

I'm thinking about getting a pair of converse sneakers, but I want to make sure I get a color I could wear with pretty much anything. I plan on wearing them with denim skirts and maybe knit maxi skirts. I don't want something that will stand out a lot either, like red.

I was trying to decide between black, grey, and white. Which one of these would be best? Or is there another color that would work better? Thanks in advance!

I'm not Angie, but I have learnt some great tips from her. What about "bookending" your hair and shoes, by choosing shoes the same colour as your hair? If you have auburn hair, cognac shoes can look great.

I like my Not Bright White connies. they seem to pair with a lot, though i do not wear them much these days, I guess they are summer shoes! Not optic white, not for me anyway!

I like my Not Bright White connies, not quite cream but not optic white. they seem fresher to me than black, and are really versatile.. though I didn't wear them much this summer, and now they'v been put away for winter. Black, and really other colors too, skew too young for me.

My hair is a bit of a mix. It's like light brown but with strawberry blonde and blonde highlights. I'm not really sure what to call it :P.

Bookending sounds neat. I'm going to check out that article.

In your profile you have stated that your hair is auburn, so I thought that was the case ...

Based on the way you describe your hair now, I suppose you can bookend it by using shoes in a variety of beiges and browns.

In general, shoes in dark neutrals (such as brown, navy, dark grey and black) will be great in winter, and they can also be used in summer. Shoes in light colours (such as beige, white and light grey) may look best in summer, but some people manage to make them look great in winter too, often by repeating the light colour somewhere else in their outfit.

I chose auburn because it seemed the closest option :). Guess I should change that.

What about chucks in the color of the season, burgundy? Would pick up the reddish bits in your hair for a bit of bookending, and is fairly neutral (it pairs nicely with black, navy, brown, white, grey, etc)

Sometimes colors like rust or burgundy can turn out to work more as neutrals, rather than the accents one might expect.

Style variations can affect versatility, too.

If I wanted to wear these with denim skirts, I might go for something like these in grey floral:

wouldn't be classically flattering on my body with skirts, but they go with everything I need them to.

ETA: I size up and wear with full-length Pedag inserts for arch support.
