Ask Angie: metallic boots for the "older" among us?

Looking for some reassurance, I suppose, about that "age-appropriate" topic again...
You know, I've never been age sixty-two before and in my mind, I "feel" like I did in my younger days. (For the most part, give or take a few more body aches.)
Yet lately when I look in the mirror, I only faintly recognize the face staring back.
This is sad to me, yet I accept this part of the aging process.
I've always been determined to age "gracefully" but now I'm unsure what that looks like?
Today I read an article from an older woman whom I highly respect and her opinion is that older women should not try to appear kittenish, since it's obvious to others and makes her appear silly.

imo, if that boot was a 6 inch stilleto, i would say it maybe age in-appropriate, but i think that the cut of that boot makes it wearable for women of all ages. i don't think there is anything kittenish about this boot. its a classic style, in an updated current color/finish.

Denise, I am considering these and I'm older than you are. I only hesitated , not because of age, but because I have a pair of gold metallic loafers that probably fill the same need. If those Seychelles boots were pewter, I would be all over them.
I know exactly what you mean about not feeling older. It's like being a 25 year old trapped in a 60+ body. Wear your gold boots with some classic pieces and you will get compliments.

Well, I just turned 64 and I'd have no problems incorporating that style (but probably in pewter) into my classic-loving wardrobe.

The whole "age appropriate" thing isn't that easy to nail down because so much depends on personality, context, attitude, and personal preferences. While I personally would shun anything that looked "little girlish", "teenage trendy", or "hot mama on the prowl", that still leaves me with lots of room to play around with trends that appeal to me. For me, the key to looking age appropriate is to keep a bit of sophistication in my outfits, especially when I'm playing around with trend. Pair those gold boots with a classic pair of trousers, or a straight-cut jean, and the look is perfectly "aa" in a modern, fresh way. Pair them with tight short shorts and a cropped, open-weave top, and things get a bit more tricky, even if you still feel 23 in your heart.

For me, the boots could work for a variety of ages. Just about to say what others have said. It is what you pair them with that will make the difference. Metallics are classics- in fact I remember a time not long ago when mostly older women embraced them. How nice to have options at any age!

I too fell hard for these boots. I have the pewter version. But they are SO sparkly. I just can't decide what to do about them. For me it' s not an age appropriate dilemma, it's making peace with the sparkles. I've considered trying to scrape off some of the sparkles. So far I've done nothing.

Thanks everyone for your input -- gave me some much-needed confidence!
I think what threw me off somewhat is the shiny color.
Didn't realize that metallics are considered classic.
But I love classic pieces and they are the staples of my wardrobe.
Gaylene, You hit the nail on the head for me -- age-appropriate involves more factors than a "number."
Angie, I always love your "finds" and trust your judgment, but didn't know whether your recommendations fit all ages or steer toward a younger group.
I did try these boots on with a pair of jeans, white button-down blouse and a cuff. Looks good to my eye!

Usually, my finds are pretty ageless. No need to worry about that.

CC, I found them overly distressed and not sparkly enough. I guess I have a very dominant magpie gene. I like high shine.

I got mine through Anthropologie and they were named Bronze, but look like the pewter( they're not like the gold). These are a step out for me, so we' ll see! However, they've really sparked my interest in metallics. I can tell I'm likely to veer toward the darker, duller metallics like dark pewter, bronze, copper. Not much a gold shoe or bag person except for very dress- up. Still, it gives me a target and I'm enjoying my quest .

These would be for me (52) or my Mom (74) since they would bookend our hair nicely (fading redhead, and sandy blonde respectively). I can see why silver or white haired women would favour the pewter.

Peeping out from an all black outfit or with a sparkly gold top for a night out, theatre, opera, movie, dinner...or with a classic white button down or T-shirt and jeans for running errands during the day.

Metallic is a neutral.

Oh, thank you, Denise. I see that Zappos also has a burgundy suede, But I miss my pewter flats in winter and think these will be perfect.

Well I am 51 and recently ordered a pair of silver boots that I am eager to wear. Now I won't wear them with a mini skirt but will be quite comfortable pairing them with pants and jeans. I say go for it!

I like to think (delude myself?) that with age we gain the sense to know how to wear what we want with some sense of dignity and that is enough at any age.

I like that they're distressed rather than shiny, and think they would look great with jeans. As long as you don't go all out with gold head to toe they'll look fine.

Hi Denise - I struggle tons with the age appropriate clothing not wanting to look like I am "trying too hard" or heading into frumpyville. I totally get it!
However, I think these boots are terrific and can see them working very well!
