Ask Angie : Martin black wool trousers

I have one pair of black trousers and they are Martin skinny. I feel that skinny trousers limit which tops I can wear with them so they are not as versatile as I would love them to be so I was looking for another pair of black trousers - straight leg.
I have ordered 3 pairs from BR :
1. Logan straight leg wool

Logan is no go at all - it is a perfect example of whiskering from Angie's post.

I was in love with Monogram ones when I got them out of the bag - fabric is excellent and they are well made. They even have a narrow satin tuxedo stripe in the side but...they are a bit tight in size 12 so again - whiskering. Size up would be ideal but I am not sure Monogram even goes to size 14. Anyway they are not available in a bigger size
Martins is a good fit. Fabric is a very lightweight wool with 5% spandex so they are more for fall / spring than for winter. But I am not sure if they are worth buying or I better wait for a better quality.
Angie, I am sure you have seen them in person - what do you think? I am not desperate to get trousers now, I want good ones - in fit and quality. Is 5% spandex too much? Should I keep them or keep looking?

Sveta, they look good, but if you are not desperate, I would wait. You are not going to wear these much in our summer. Why not see if there are some fab trousers for NAS? And in any case, these will go on sale again (they always do) so they will always be available.

Good point about NAS Suz. As for them being available: my Monogram white trousers are completely gone form BR website - both in white and black...

No, I don't think they opened Toronto's NAS yet or we would be hearing Canadian YLF members screaming in delight!
Suz and I are making plans to drive to Troy for NAS this year together.

But these are the Martins, right? They will come available again. Monogram, maybe not, it is true.

Sounds as if maybe you are feeling the need for them, in which case go for it!

Nay, I have already made up my mind - I will return them. I want a more substantial fabric.

Sveta, I have these! I really like them. I don't have a problem with the lighter fabric and wear mine in winter, no problem. In fact, I have these in grey and navy (cotton blend, not the wool) and they have become every day pants for me. I think they are great basics. But, if you need a heavier fabric I can understand that. I do really like the shape and fit on you. Probably this style will still be around this summer from BR since they are a basic.

Yeah, this is what I think, Jeneva - they will be around again so available.

For our winters they are probably not warm enough. For spring/ fall they would be.

You're returning them but in that side view pic, I don't really like all that rippling and wrinkling in the back legs.

I've found the Martin and Ryan fits from BR are best. But I prefer stiffer fabrics so I usually wait until fall to pick out trousers, right now everything will be thinner materials for spring/summer wear.

They fit very well. Although a little short........sorry to be a PPL tyrant.

I have many happy clients in this trouser, Sveta. It's a goodie. I have many pairs of black bottoms!!!

Angie, are you sure they are short? They are straight legs, not trousers - how long should they be?
Anyway they have some hem length to let out if required. Angie, do you recommend to keep them?

They look lovely but I think you are right in waiting for better fabric. My new houndstooth pants would be so much better if they were thicker and warmer...

Exhibit A and B. I wear my drapey and fluid straight legs a little longer. Note the more exaggerated crease line on the top of my bootie. I wouldn't be me if I wasn't pedantic about pant lengths :(.

I think you should keep them. GREAT thigh, crotch and hip fit.

Angie, I was trying to look at those exactly picturs in hope there is a back view I can see but I found none. So how far on the back of the shoe these trousers should go - definitely not 1/2" inch from the ground. On me they completely cover the shoe base and about 1/3 of the heel as well. So should I just aim for a crease line on the top then? How low should I go? I want to be able to wear them with different heel heights including flats - should I?
They have about 2" of the hem which can be let out so length should not be an issue if I can figure out what is the correct one then.
I think I will not return them with the rest of Gap/BR stuff tomorrow and keep them until I am back from my trip - don't want to make a rushed decision...
