Ask Angie: J Crew Hacking Jacket in herringbone

Angie - I realize your list from this morning's (brilliant) blog post on modern classic style was not a "must haves" list, but I was inspired to check J Crew once more for tweed/tailored jackets (I had been coming up against final sale items that I wasn't prepared to gamble on).

I found the hacking jacket available in what I think is my size (6) in both gray (on sale, yay) and deep purple (full price, but yummy color). I ordered the gray, but am now thinking I should get the purple, too, just to see if I prefer it? Did I make the right choice or should I go ahead and order the purple, too?

I also ordered the schoolboy blazer in donegal tweed. Do you think the jacket is too boxy for someone with an hourglass figure? I ordered a 6 here as well. http://www.jcrew.com/womens_fe...../55757.jsp

Yeah. I'm thinking purple with your boot cuts and apple green cowboy boots. This outfit will make you VERY happy, you rebellious MPJ-Modern-Classic.

I am not sure about the school boy blazer's fit I'm afraid.

I have the hacking jacket in purple! I haven't been very creative with it, sadly. It's a great piece - a little heavy and fitted, but nice quality. Can't wait to see your pictures.

I usually prefer to go down a size in J Crew jackets. Where I'm a 4 or a 6 at someplace like Banana Republic, I'm almost always a 2 and occasionally a 4 at JC. It's the only way I can get that nip in at the waist I like, but I tend to like my jackets quite fitted. No specific experience with either of these specific items this season.

Yes, I don't usually tend to buy J. Crew because they seem to be designed for rectangles, but the hacking jacket is supposed to be nipped in somewhat. The schoolboy is definitely boxy...I'm not sure how that will look on my hourglass frame (um, not good? ha.)

ETA I was wondering if I would be a 4 or a 6 but after chatting with an online specialist, she was thinking 6 or 8 (because of bust size?) so I ended up getting the 6.

ETA #2 I weakened and ordered both the schoolboy blazer and hacking jacket in a 4. I'm guessing the 4 in the hacking jacket _really_ won't fit (according to the specialist) but the blazer is boxier, and to get the look I want, the 4 may actually work.
