Ask Angie: Grey and Navy

Hi Angie and fellow Fabbers,

This may be a silly question but can navy and dark greys be worn together?
It's a colour combination I haven't tried before and I am just not sure.
The items in question are in pics #1 and #2.

The navy skinny leg pants I have had since early in the year but I haven't worn them yet:(. The "gun smoke" top I bought yesterday. I am ok with light greys and navy but can this darker grey be worn with navy?

I'm not sure the navy is showing up well in the pictures but it is a true dark navy.

I think it would work. At the moment I'm loving the combo of royal blue and cobalt blue with grey.

I certainly hope so - it's my go to combo in the winter... Both are neutrals right? My other fave (but not your palette) is grey with camel.

I wear them together, Deb. I might lighten it somehow with some silver or white or a light grey touch somewhere to help unify, but I'm not sure that's necessary at all.

I think you're on track and getting good advice. They're neutrals in the cool family, so they " go", so don't hesitate to wear. But like any combo, certain shades will set each other off better, something to think about for new purchases, and as Suz says you might
also find ways to accessorize to tie them together and lighten up to tweak things in a certain direction.
I'm very interested in your post and combos right now as I'm trying to develop better neutral mixing and while " all neutrals go together" in some universes, some combos are better than others! Also some shades of neutrals work as well as " colors" for face- brightening, and others do not.

I really like these colours together, especially if there's a bit of white or cream somewhere in the outfit too (ah, I see Suz made the same comment:-)

And I can absolutely see this colour combo work for you.

Navy & grey was one of my chosen colour combos when I was doing the abbreviated wardrobe thing with my clothes all in storage. So I say yes!

If I recall correctly, you have worn this combo before, as part of your culottes outfit. A navy blouse paired with your grey printed moto jacket. And of course it looked great.

I think the key for mixing neutrals like grey and navy, grey and black, even black and brown, is that the two are at least a few shades away from each other. If there isn't enough difference, it might appear to be an unintentional mismatch. But these two garments should combine beautifully.

I agree with FF, the colors are different enough to be distinguishable so it works fine!

This is a great, fresh take on the "column of black" and I think you'll love it for the same reasons you love your black. Good show, Deborah!
