Ask Angie & everyone: My Alice & Olivia Trousers finally arrived. Fit??

It has been quite the saga to get these pants to me in the correct size but they finally arrived and I rushed home at lunch to try them on. I quickly snapped pictures, I hope you can see the details. I want honest opinions on the fit. At this price point I want them to be a 10. Do note that I have a lot of excess length which is folded up and does affect the drape. I actually think they may need to be taken in at the waist a touch which never happens with me (pic 3/4). The pocket does kind of a weird thing (pic 5). I can smooth the pocket lining to correct this but I'll have to wear them around for awhile to see if it stays. Thanks for looking!

ETA - in looking at the A&O website I found these http://www.aliceandolivia.com/olivia-wwb-pant.html (pic 6)which look like the same pant, just leather detailing (they don't give a fabric content which is kind of frustrating). The description says faux slant pockets at hip. If they are really faux, I wonder if I should give them a shot. I usually like no or faux front pockets better. Angie, are these the ones you have?

I would love to make a very discerning assessment with you, but I just can't tell how they truly fit from these photos - and black photographs badly unfortunately. Any chance you can snap in better light, AM?

How big are they around the waist? I would be very careful to alter at the waist. You will loose the swagger and fluidity that is important for this style. From the photos, they do not look big on the waist.

I like the way they fit on the legs. Not too snug. I'm not sure what's happening on the pocket though. Are they pulling in that area?

As far as the other pants go that you found on the website, I would e-mail A&O and see if they can give you the fabric content. Sometimes they have that info even if it's not posted on the website. (It's irritating that everyone doesn't post this stuff, IMO.) Can't wait to see tomorrow's pix!

Also, I have observed that if I shorten a boot-cut/fluid fit pant too much, it just looks weird from the knee down. You might want to check that aspect out too, since it's a tad too long? Do they have only one length of in-seams? Or could you go with a shorter in-seam?

The rise looks very low to me. Are you comfortable with that? Can you still tuck as you please?

I tried these on again when I got home and there is definitely something wrong with the construction of the pockets. The inside (where your palm would lay if your hands were in the pocket) it cut bigger than the outside so it doesn't lay flat. To get rid of the bunching I had to tuck some fabric under the side seem. Of course this left a weird pucker. No good. I expected better construction for the price so I'm going to assume this is a one pair flaw. Gigi - I did find that pair on Bloomingdale's' site with that fabric content. I went ahead and ordered them. After all this hassle I'm determined! Hopefully the 4th time is the charm. I'll still try to get some better pictures to post later today.

Eh, to be blunt - I think they're too big, and that alterations would be a euphemism for recut and reconstruct.

On the other hand, getting a pair of pants is one way to get a nice basic design and good fabric to have trousers made up for you...

rachylou - my first though when I put them on is that the were too big but I think it's just because they are slouchy and I am not used to having any extra room in the waist so that threw me off. Once I put a belt on they didn't look too big but definitely not fitted. I already tried one size down and there was not doubt that they were too small. This is one case where it would be really nice to be in the store with a bunch of the same sizes to try.
Suz - I wear a 4 in BR Martins (they are not fitted at all in the 4, I'll post a pic of those later) and these are a size 6. Initially I tried a 4 and they were too tight. Hope that helps. The new pair I ordered from Bloomingdale's are mostly a wool content while these are mostly cotton.

Thank you...it helps, but only in the sense of showing me I am right to be confused. I suspect I might be between sizes in these. The ones I want to order are non-returnable (ebay) so I think it's not worth the risk. Alas...

I forgot to answer your orginal question, AM. Mine are 2 years old and from Nieman Marcus. They are the same trousers though. Glad you're getting another pair, and hopefully the pocket linings will behave.

FWIW, I don't prefer the fit on the model in #6. They look too snug. These are not slouchy trousers. Just baggier than what you are used to.
