Ask Angie: (et al.) K or R - black slouchy pants

Happy Friday, all I have three purchases that are causing me mental turmoil -- I just can't figure out K/R and am SO grateful for any and all help! I'll split them into separate threads to minimize pics.

Apology #1: for jumping in to ask for help when I've been so scarce. I keep thinking I'll be mentally freed up, then something else comes along that gets me all quiet and introspective. Most recent is an interview next Monday for a new direction -- now that the youngest has successfully completed high school!

Apology #2: for not being able to do collages. I have the trimming part figured out, but not collages!

Okay, on to the business at hand: Slouchy black pants. Probably meant for some tall willowy person - like I am in my imagination

pics 1 - 3: with heels I'll never wear IRL, but show better what's intended
pics 4-6: with the height shoes I would wear.

I adore slouchy clothes, but with my short pearness really need to be careful with slouch. These are very nice quality and not my usual bargain, so I'd want them to look okay for more than one year of slouchy trendiness.

Worthwhile to alter? Shorten for sure, but anywhere else? If altered, should I keep or lose those gold buttons at the bottom?

I vote keep. I think the side view looks good. So do the front and back views. I don't think they need any alterations except hemming.

How much would you shorten them?

Thanks, CF - that's a good question. Probably 4 inches. So, do I see if they can raise that slit also, or just let it be a short slit after they remove inches of length. . .?

I adore these! They look fantastic on you, front, side, and back. And I really like the little buttons on the bottom. They appeal to the urban prince. It would be great if you could keep that detail somehow; it's quite interesting. And buttoning more or less would still allow them to be hemmed for heels and/or lower heels. On the other hand, I can also see that for some people it might feel too fussy.

I really like them too, Sara, nothing wrong at all with that side view. Or any view for that matter! It would be nice to leave some of the button detail after shortening. Hopefully Amgie will weigh in on how to treat the ankle slit.

Thanks, Suz and Pil - the buttons are just decorative - weird, huh? I'd be tempted to remove and simplify, but maybe they add the right amount of interest?

But then again, maybe in altering they could be made functional. . .

I wanted to make the Leiths work, but my calves were always too restricted and when some had fabric tearing problems, I just had to return. These have give in the fabric, so my calves and thighs are still happy when I sit down

actually, i LOVE how you wore the pants here, like spats. the gold buttons are great detail.

BJ's thought was sort of my own...it's spat like. You could always keep for a while and then get rid of later.

I like these with the heels (or at that length)! And my side view will destroy your side view. You look great.

Una - I like the look with heels too, but I've sworn off anything over about 2" So the shorter me has to be acceptable.

Sara, I'm echoing bj here, too, and like how you're wearing them. So, you have to decide between under-two-inch heels or flats due to the hem? I like the heels, but I also can totally relate to what you're saying about IRL vs. our imaginary life, too.

I really like the button detail, so hem away and wear the shoes that are comfortable.

Sara, I'm not crazy about the button part at the bottom. It's the risky part of the garment. I believe the slouchy part of the trouser will stick around next year, so a good investment. But the buttons are currently a fringe concept and they could either take off, making this a brilliant buy, or they could be "so last year" next year. Does that make sense? So I'd whack off the bottom if there's still enough length or look for another pair. I do like the way they fit and the overall drape.

(Just read through the comments. A bit of a slit at the bottom, without the buttons, would be an acceptable alteration IMO. Sorry I just don't have the enthusiasm for the buttons as others do!)

Vicki - those are 4-inch heels in the first pics! I don't know what possessed me to buy them (two years ago!) (actually the foot portion is comfortable), so they will probably soon make their debut as a giveaway! The second set of pics is wearing 2-inch heels - as I would hem for. Glad to hear they look okay to you. Another vote noted for keeping the buttons!

Cocolion - no need to apologize for not liking the buttons I think I'm less fond of the buttons myself, but we'll see what alterations says.

Angie - Thank you for taking the time with all my K/Rs today I SO appreciate your expert eyes and expert opinion! I'm thrilled they pass muster with you! They are not completely conservative, seem to have a bit of elegance IRL (elegance has become a sort of litmus test lately), and are actually from GUCCI (via Nordstrom Rack) -- so hopefully not too trendy and yet very well made! Fingers crossed I will be happy in them for a few years

Sara, I am in love with these rousers - buttons and all! If you can shorten them they are keepers for sure! What brand they are, do you have a link?
If they are 4 in too long for you then they maybe - maybe - can fit me?

I like them. I'm wondering if, when shortened, zippers could be put in instead of the buttons..still an interesting detail and fun look.
