Ask Angie: (et al.) K or R - Eileen Fisher jacket

Happy Friday, all!!

I have three purchases that are causing me mental turmoil -- I just can't figure out K/R and am SO grateful for any and all help! I'll split them into separate threads to minimize pics.

Apology #1: for jumping in to ask for help when I've been so scarce. I keep thinking I'll be mentally freed up, then something else comes along that gets me all quiet and introspective. Most recent is an interview next Monday for a new direction -- now that the youngest has successfully completed high school!

Apology #2: for not being able to do collages. I have the trimming part figured out, but not collages!

Okay, on to the business at hand: Eileen Fisher jacket.

I always got sucked in by her awesome fabrics, but too often looked shapeless in the styles. Did I just buy too big, or do I choose the wrong silhouettes? I'm insecure with Eileen Fisher.

If I keep, I think I'll add two fairly large black buttons/buttonholes in front. I like being able to tame the fabric in front like that. Pic #3 shows it pinned closed and where I'd place the other button.

Flattering or shapeless?? or ??

It's cool....but, yeah. I have this same problem with EF. I love the stuff...in theory. But it generally swamps me somehow, even when it shouldn't. Or I try the wrong items.

I feel insecure with EF, too, so I am leaving this one to better minds than my own.

oh, honey, much too much fabric and not enough shape for you. it looks like it has great texture, but all i see is a big triangle of black.

i too lust after ef, but i have to stop buying. i need to be taller and more crunchy-granola.

I feel the same way about EF, even the petites. Love in theory, can't pull off in practice. You look very nice but it does seem a little oversized. Personally I like that look.

Too funny, Suz, BJ, Una - so how exactly can someone under 6 feet tall pull off Eileen Fisher successfully

BJ - hmm, I need to ponder the black triangle. I might look like that in all my non-belted coats . . .

and Una - I love it too, but sometimes it gets away from me IFKWIM!

Just to be sure, this is an outdoor coat, correct? It looks that way to me, and as such, i think it looks lovely.

If it is meant to be worn indoors, it is too big and I vote return.

I also struggle eith EF. Her fabrics are sumtuous, and they always hang just right on the models. Then I put them on . . . yeah, not so much!

Thistle - yes, it's unlined, and I'd wear it as a lightweight outer jacket. But that's a good point as the one Angie recently highlighted seems more indoors.

I really like it, if you want a black lightweight coat. It fits in the shoulder. I like the oversized fit, which feels modern to me. Your button idea is great. It has a modern A or triangle shape. I love the pleat in back. My main question for you is: are you ok with the black color. This would be a deal breaker for me, as I'm saturated with black toppers -- I have several black leather jackets and blazers and that's enough for me since I'm trying to move away from black.

Eileen Fisher cuts generously; used to be known as only a plus-sized label. In the past 12 or so years the label has started targeting a younger and hipper market. *ALL* of Eileen Fisher is meant to be figure-skimming. I also find it fabulous for travel. I never understand the crunchy-granola comments (which I have battled against on this forum in the past) - yes, 12 years ago, EF was definitely a bit more shapeless. Now, however, it is often quite modern. I love my EF pieces and I am a size 2-4 for most labels at this point.

That jacket fits you perfectly, according to EF's own design guidelines. I do not think it overwhelms you at all. And I love texture and black.

cocolion - it's surprisingly charcoal overall, and I think I can still carry off charcoal well Thanks, and I think I know what you mean about too much black -- like in Angie's saturation post today. . .

IK - I figured you'd understand the EF pull - those fab textures of her wovens AND knits!! This one looks pretty stable and sturdy (I've had a few let me down in the past).

Angie - thank you for chiming in and thanks for the jacket approval (although I'd still happily thank you if it was jacket disapproval !)
I miss you and YLF too! I DO get to read on YLF most days. I just tend to draw inward when I feel stresses, and this spring has brought plenty of stresses

Caro - is this elegant ecletic? I bet it would look great with those silver booties too!

And now that I understand it as an outdoor coat I feel more positive about it. It was as an indoor item that it confused me most.

You have also given me hope that maybe I can manage EF after all....
