Ask Angie: Are these tops too twee for me?

I bought a few tops last night at JCrew in a pre-vacation shopping frenzy but in the cold light of day I'm wondering if they are too twee for me.

The silk sleeveless blouse in heart dot caught my eye as a more sophisticated summer top but presents two difficulties...first, is the print too young, and second, if I have to layer in order to wear this very sheer top, is it really a practical summer top? I do love the high-low hem and tailored details.

The ruffle top threw me for a loop because it looked quite nice on, but...but...ruffles?! I thought we broke up! Should I pass? Love the color, print and so on...obviously the ruffles are a major detail but they elevate the top above most of my pedestrian sartorial choices.

Finally, the chiffon sleeve tee in black...should I have picked up navy as well, or instead of the black?

I think they are feminine and whimsical rather than twee, plus you can style them to not look too precious. I love your choices.

I like all of these. Let's face it—some of us just like ruffles! (Me, for instance.)

J. Crew has been doing a lot of tops like this, with the cute design (hearts, cats, etc.). They're not very twee IMO because the little design is printed and rotated so as to create an overall textural effect; the little icon isn't the star of the show itself. It's cute patterns for grown-ups.

Angie, I had not seen the navy in store...so I bought the black rather by default. I am undecided...having both colors would almost be like duplicating, a the colors are so similar.

Well...........I bought the ruffle blouse in the apricot color. I just happen to like the color and don't see it very often. I was also unsure about the ruffles but they are going down the side of the shirt and I think they have an interesting effect.

Could it be my wishful thinking they make the shirt look loose and drapey without making it look baggy and boxy? I have found that with my small frame, this provided an up to date look without overwhelming my small frame (tall but small).
