Ask Angie: Are Hemlines going up, up, up?

I seem to be seeing shorter and shorter hemlines. Lots of dresses and skirts that are a nod to the 1960s. Short shorts, too. Do you think that shorter hemlines are on the upswing in general?

On the complete other end of the spectrum, I was just flipping through the H&M spring/summer catalog (there is some fun stuff by the way - I'm plotting a bargain spring weight loss capsule) . I definitely noticed short skirts and dresses that would be considered a tunic at best on 5'5"ish me. But there were also many pencil skirts and more body con dresses in knee and midi length, and a few a-line types at longer lengths as well. So hopefully this means we'll get more hemline variety this year. But I do not recall seeing a single maxi.

If that's the case, my current habit of ignoring skirts in the stores will be even more justified.

Actually, no - quite the opposite, Claudia. Hemlines on the catwalks are generally a LOT longer than they are at retail. This trend has been going on for years (and I don't understand why). I watch hundreds of shows across all four fashion capitals every fashion season, and the trend has definitely been towards the midi.

Yes! I just told y'all your knees were fat! Sorry. Work flashback. My boss said I had fat knees once, because I'm so easy to get a rise out of. Hehe. There is no such thing as *knee fat.*

Well, Rachylou, my MIL apparently thinks there's such a thing as skinny knees. A few months ago, she was complaining that my FIL needed to gain more weight (he doesn't; he just isn't overweight like her), and said he didn't have any meat on his knees.

Interesting. I'm so happy to find a dress that is mostly the right length for me that it's hard to actually work toward having any kind of trendy hemline or having one kind of dress this year and another the next.
