I need help selecting bottoms and boots for a reception at 6 p.m. tomorrow in a J. Crew store (hor d'oeuvres and wine served and part of proceeds to an exhibition), followed by dinner with a friend in a quite fancy NYC restaurant.

I definitely want to wear the white ruffle-sleeved blouse and the 3/4 sleeve jacket in these pictures, but I can't decide between the "fat" draped pants (1 and 2) and the very slim-legged ones (3). Likewise, I am at odds with myself over whether to choose the thigh-high Chanel-style boots or the pointy, shiny booties (thigh-highs on left and booties on right in each picture, 1-3). There's also a question about whether I should wear my antique gold crescent pin or (4) the bow that came with the jacket, which can be worn right at the neck or like a pin. Finally, if I go with the slim pants and the booties, should I zip and tuck or wear the bottom of the pant unzipped over the bootie?

It's terribly cold here now, so I will have a warm fur or faux fur knee-length coat over whatever. I am also likely to pile on the real pearls. Please advise! And don't hesitate to let me know if the whole thing is a bad choice. I have a number of black jacket and bottom silhouettes to choose from.

  • Blouse, Comme de Garcons
  • Jacket, Stella McCartney collection for H&M, lots of years ago
  • Jacquard draped pants, made by me
  • Smooth slim, zipper-bottom pants, Ports1961
