Oh. My. Gosh. SO much wisdom here!!
Big ahas:
1. I have a short waist and a regular to long rise! I didn't know that - esp about the rise (thanks@Suz!) Wth my curvy hourglass figure, this can make me look squat in boxy looks if I am not very careful about lengths and structure. My FF Priority is keeping my legline long - even if that means my waist looks a bit shorter.
2. I need to avoid all horizontal straight lines. They don't work with my curvy figure, my curly hair or my face full of curves (my nose, lips, cheekbones are all curvy - which is why straight stripes dint look good on me but organic patterns do)
I summarized all the advice that applies to me below and put it in a note on my phone for easy reference. Feel free to copy yourself - it's a goldmine! Thank you Fabbers!!
For cropped toppers, semi-tuck or untuck tops underneath, to fool the eye into lengthening my torso.
keep the top and bottom low-contrast to help elongate the torso and again camouflage where the waist is.
cropped toppers are best if they are fitted and structured - jackets or cardis. great fit at the neck and shoulder.
wear slightly cropped fitted jackets or longer ones.
Looser wider pants are best slightly cropped to lengthen leg line and add structure
lengthen the torso by not tucking tops. For me: tops should be longer than hipbone and never straight across - makes me look wide and squat. Asymmetric hems, faux tuck or tops that sit just over the waist welted jumpers. Be careful to keep legline long
-long over lean silhouettes (for me: tops that drape against the body (not boxy), neat shoulder neck fit for structure, expose neck, and asymmetric hems to keep me from looking squat)
-high contrast between top and topper with topper worn open (basically creates a long rectangle at the center of my body) Leaving the toppers open creates vertical integrity too.
- Boxy cropped toppers worn over long tops (short over long over lean)
button just one button on my toppers, right at or just under the bust. This creates diagonal lines/ X shape on my torso that I think is flattering. Also creates illusion of a waist, but higher than my natural waist -- the creates an overall effect of "lift"
tall boots in the same colour as the trousers would add a harmonious longer line. Note: very important to get a tailored ankle fit wth tall Boots (no slouching or bagging.) to show structure at ankle. Do not buy online
add necklaces to bring the focus higher - short or long to lengthen silhouette
My figure flattery priority is not to make my legs look too short (because, ironically, despite being short waisted, I'm also verging on short legged for my height (that long rise again, sigh) and I never want to shorten that line deliberately. - ME TOO! I have a host waist and regular to long rise fior my height, which is why I can look 'squat" easily in non-tailored looks. FF Priority: keep long legline
first thing is that my cropped toppers often have to be more cropped than what a regular-waisted person could wear. I literally have one from the children's department which works.
A column of colour or pattern beneath jacket can help because the eye doesn't know where one part of you starts and one stopes. Pattern especially fools the eye. Think dresses or two piece dresses or matching pants and top.
To make boxy tops work - high-waisted skinnies. Or a pencil skirt.
Match a belt to your top to lower the waistline
Know your best measurements and carry a measuring tape. It will save you from trying on what will not work.
wear jackets that cut in at the waist - I'm looking at you VB and Gibson riding jacket.
short cardi - wear it buttoned up. Shrunken style cardigans work better with wide leg pants, imo.
Avoid straight horizontal lines at all costs. They don't work for my curvy body or my curly hair or my face full of curves.
bottom edge of the sweater sleeves hits right where the bottom of the sweater hits. This is one of the shapes I tend to avoid with tops and jackets, because I don't care for how it looks--it automatically creates a "box" effect because the whole garment cuts across the body right at the same level at the bottom edge. Cuff/scrunch sleeves so no horizontal line
Lift up the girls wth a hardcore bra to give me a few more inches of waist
