Ask Angie: (and others) is there such a thing?

I'm in love with Angie's turtleneck in her blog post today. And I'm kinda digging the look of a turtleneck with trousers and a blazer. BUT...I often find turtlenecks to be too warm and not fit my short neck properly.

I guess what I would want is a thin (but not flimsy) knit with either a mock turtleneck or a turtleneck that isn't too tall for me. Is there such a thing?

Zara always has cotton turtlenecks that I love, not too warm!

No turtleneck love from me. They look fab on long-necked ladies like Angie, and not so fab on short-necked ones like me. Also they make one's torso look thicker and boobs look bigger -- not a look I EVER want!

But you should be able to find a lightweight cotton turtleneck at Banana Republic or the Gap, I should think.

Rute makes a great point about cotton. Nordies will have some soon - they always do. So does J. Crew. If I see some, I'll give you a shout. A less high turtleneck is a great idea - and I love the sound of it with your skirts, Shannon.

I have very thin turtlenecks - much more sheer and gauzy than the pink one I am wearing in today's post. I also have mid weights and VERY thick weights. I have it all covered because turtlenecks are my look. They give me shape, neck structure and a sizeable bust

Thank you for the wisdom ladies! Are there "petite" versions of turtlenecks I wonder? It's been about 20 years since I wore a turtleneck because I hated how they looked on me but they were the thick kind of bulky kind and I had to roll the neck down twice because it was too tall and then the neck was so thick I felt like it was choking me. Time to try a more modern version.

Well, good luck with your turtle neck quest. I'm short and busty, but I have a long neck for my height. I used to love turtlenecks (when I was 30 to 40), but not so much anymore. Even a mock seems to make me look old and icky, and the magnifying effect on my bust is Unpleasant and makes me look dumpy. With age, skin is more flattering that fabric, on me. What I look for is actually a cowl or a very, very relaxed t-neck. That works fine for my very mild southern weather.

Shannon, last year I bought 6 turtlenecks from Ricki's. The weight was perfect, thin, fine gauge. I am only 5'4 and a curvy size12 but I received several compliments. I always wore a necklace, not a long one but one that would sit slightly below my collar bone to break up the 'all boob' visual, usually something chunky and interesting.

A - thanks for the Ricki's tip. I actually have to pop into the mall tonight (that's where our local post office is) so will have a peek and see what they have.

Kiki - I honestly don't know if a turtleneck will suit me or not but there's only one way to find out!

I'm with Elizabeth - I CANNOT wear t-necks or mocknecks - neck too short, too busty, feel dumpy. Angie looks swan-like and gorgeous in hers, of course.

I bought two - a black one and a gorgeous teal colour (which doesn't seem to be available with this year's colour selection). It's very comfortable, not too hot, and I like the ribbing on it because it has the same sort of camouflage-effect as ruching/pattern or what have you - it's forgiving and 'nice' to any extra flabby bits, imo - because of the texture.

In any case - I believe The Bay carries the INC brand - might be worth looking there to see if they might have these turtlenecks so you could give it a whirl.

Notes from me: size up in this particular turtleneck. Also - it's a bit on the short side, so not something you'd necessarily wear untucked with pants - depends on your height I think. Works beautifully tucked into skirts *and* worn untucked with skirts. For trousers, it works better tucked (imo and on me - I'm 5' 6" tall).

Next time you happen to be at The Bay - you might take a look and see if they have these there to try on.

I don't wear turtlenecks (more of a cowl girl myself), but have had mock turtlenecks in the past and find they avoid the strangulation feeling I get with normal turtles How about something like this:

Here is one, in petite, that I got from Land's End last year. On sale in lots of colours in petite: http://www.landsend.com/pp/wom.....02_48.html

Generally Land's End stuff does not fit me. It is often too boxy and just shaped badly for me. But this is a very nice lightweight slim fitting turtleneck, soft, not too warm, easy to layer. I really like it. The neck can be folded or scrunched depending on one's personal preference and figure flattery needs.

Shannon, take a look at the Anne Klein turtleneck at Nordstrom. A SA brought it to me last weekend when I wanted to try on a sweater underneath a jacket I was considering. The jacket was a no go, but I loved the turtleneck. It's lightweight, made of rayon and nylon, and comes in several colors. You might like it. It's $79 and machine washable, always a plus in my book. IRL, the neck of the sweater is higher than it appears in the photo.

The orange one would have come home with me had I not already had an orange cashmere sweater—though that one IS a boatneck. Hmm.

How bout a bit more bust talk? I find turtlenecks have an unflattering side-effect: the uniboob. This is when they make the bust look like one solid shelf. It's also a rounding effect on me to have no V shape near my neck, and it makes my face look rounder than I'd like.

Solution: a longer necklace with a pendant that hangs below the bustline creates a nice deep V, and effectively negates a uniboob.

I love turtlenecks and recently bought the ones Suz was referring from lands end.They really have a good fit and are super confy.
