Ask Angie and Others: How do you wear silver footwear?

After viewing literally hundreds of WIWs, it suddenly occurred to me that I don't actually know how to wear silver footwear. I bought these shoes specifically to wear with navy slacks. My hair is dark, dark brown (not quite black) and I would not be book ending the shoes with any additional silver. In your opinion, would the shoes stand out and look odd? Thank you.

I wear my metallic shoes as "neutrals" -- silver and pewter shoes specifically as "cool neutrals". My hair is also brown, so when I wear metallic shoes I instead bookend with jewelry, a belt or the metallic accents on my handbag.

I had the same thoughts you had when I first started wearing metallic shoes. And, to be perfectly honest, anything other than black, navy or brown shoes used to throw me for a loop. So do not feel embarrassed. I think this is a common thought and reaction.

Oh -- and I find silver shoes are also nicely bookended by wearing some shade of gray in the outfit.

My hair is nearly black and I almost never bookend with black footwear, even with black pants. Much prefer light or metallic. Lets my hair stand out Your flats are a darker metallic so you could easily pop in place of black or navy, and if you wanted a little more balance any lighter shade addition would be enough; so would showing more skin, via neckline, sleeve length or pant length. To get used to them try a few outfits around the house, especially with cropped pants, and think of them the way you think about gray or charcoal.

I love that gunmetal color and have had several pair over the years. The bright true silver like Angie wears I am not fond of. Too much upkeep for me. the gunmetal or pewter does not show scuff marks.

I think what El Cee said is really true. The first time you wear any colour of footwear you're not used to, it can feel peculiar. Also, you might find yourself gawking at your own feet for the first few wears. Sometimes in shock and sometimes in awe.

I wear mine with white or colors, typically. They get the most love in outfits that would otherwise looking heavy with dark accessories.

That said, my favorite outfit this summer was a white off-the-shoulder blouse, fluid black linen wide-leg trousers and my mirror-finish silver slides.

So, I guess it has more to do with the style and "vibe" of the shoe for me, than color coordination.

That's the same color I got for my daughter. She will wear them (if they fit and if she likes them) with a light blue bridesmaid dress, I think they will go nicely but the boss will decide. She is also more comfortable with black shoes although she has medium brown hair and can look fab with light colored shoes.
I like your post as we can get more ideas on how to wear silver shoes.
How did they fit you? Are you pleased with them?
I got for myself the black and the snake print but may only keep one.

I also use silver and pewter shoes as neutrals, but like to sometimes use a silver/pewter belt or bag with them, although I don't think it's needed. I have come to prefer a dark metallic like these to the heavier look of black footwear. They seem to go with everything.

Echoing what Joy said...I find metallic shoes softer and that they tend to go with everything. I have several pairs of shoes in a lighter pewter than you showed here and I wear them with anything and everything.

Joyce -- I tried them on when I got home. They are a little tight across the right foot, but I think they will loosen up nicely. I love them. I am going to search for a gunmetal clutch now. YAY. So HAPPY.

I noticed that a lot of Forum Members collected this particular shoe. I would like to add my voice to Angie's. They are indeed fabulous!!!!!! I have wide feet and I think they will be perfect for me.

I too wear silver or pewter as a neutral. The funny thing is that you may initially scratch your head about how to wear them, but once you start wearing them, you'll find yourself always reaching for them. I like them to add a little extra oomph to an outfit that would seem blah with black.

I think I have about six pairs of silver/pewter footwear. I think they elevate a blah outfit just as K. Period said. I did hesitate with my really really bright silver Fitflops, but I got used to them. I'm not sure if I like people mentioning my shoes or not. And they will with silver. If they say nice shoes, I'm okay with that. But I don't like it if they say something like wow those shoes are really silver.

With fading red hair cognac is my bookend colour, and you would think maybe gold - but I LOVE my silver pointy toe loafers and wear them with EVERYTHING! My favourite is with bottoms that reveal a flash of ankle -white crops, white and faded rolled jeans, pale blue ankle pants. I also have a skirt with silver threads running through it that is a slam dunk.

Frankly, when I can't figure which footwear goes best with an outfit I'll default to the silver - they never let me down. Oh! They also happen to be made of super soft Italian leather and are very comfy!

Robin -- my entire shoe wardrobe consisted of black shoes!!! I bought my first white loafers last year. I bought my first navy ballet slippers in August 2016. And now I bought these gunmetal pointy flats. THRILLED, I tells ya.

I've been trying on black shoes to wear with dresses that have a lot of black in them, and I can't bring myself to pull the trigger. I wear silver flats often, and it has occurred to me that maybe I could wear silver shoes with my dresses. Can I wear them in fall and winter?

I have dark ash blonde hair that's going silver (kind of a bright, light gray) and I love wearing pewter and silver shoes to add a bit of interest to my laid-back smart casual looks.

The Taos sneakers below are go-to with black slacks or jeans and a top that's muted, rather than bright. When I wear bright tops, I tend to wear black shoes, or leopard, to highlight the bright and that I'm just snapping with color that day. My pewter shoes are more subtle and so I pair them with softer tops.

I have no idea if what I'm doing has any fashion logic. I just like how it looks.

Wow, Linda, LOVE those sneakers. How is the arch support and heel padding? My beloved purple sneakers are dying so I'm on the lookout.

jacquez, the arch support on the sneakers is actually pretty darn good. I have bad knees (shoes must be stable and not "hard" on footfalls) and my feet require arch support, so it sounds like we need the same things. I can wear the Taos sneaker all day. The support is very good. I'm not sure about the heel padding. I find them comfy.

I found this photo of the last time I wore my metallic flats. They are a mix of light gold, rose gold and silver. The shoes pre-date the Finds! They are Frye, and extremely comfy!

I've been considering those lovely flats. My feet are slightly wide with a high arch and I love cushion/supportive soles. Do these show much toe cleavage? Would u post a pic of you wearing them? Our local shoe boutique has some vionic, but not these! Thanks!
