Ask Angie: and others: hose/tights color with navy dress?

I have a family memorial service to attend in December. I would like to wear a navy dress with 3/4 sleeves. Do I wear black tights and boots, brown boots with ? tights or nude hose with nude or leopard shoes? It will probably be cold but we won't be outside. I have a cropped winter white jacket I can wear or a black one. All opinions welcome!

I personally tend to go for the 'safe' option of black tights and shoes/boots in most cases and just accessorise to add extra colour if appropriate.

In terms of whether to use black items rather than the lighter ones really boils down to the preferences of your family. Is it custom for everyone to wear dark colours as a mark of respect, or are your family more from the 'celebrators of life' camp?

If the latter, white sounds like a fab idea!

You could go with navy tights or hose with black boots. Or brown tights with brown boots if your hair is brown.

Why not try (subdued) print tights in colors of purple/blues/black with black boots? If it's chic and demure, it will look appropriate. This, or purple or navy blue solid cotton tights, which have a little thickness and are not see through, with brown boots.

For a memorial service, I would probably go with the black boots and tights.

For a memorial service, I'd say black boots and black jacket. Nude or black tights, depending on the weather, length of dress, and if you want to lighten up just a tad.

I'd probably wear sheer navy hose with whichever boots or footwear looked best. And a coat vs. jacket.

I'd wear sheer black stockings (if the skirt is knee length. Opaque if much above the knee) and black shoes. Nothing to call attention to itself.

Just to be safe I wouldn't wear the white jacket or leopard shoes. The black or nude shoes & black or nude sheer hose with a black jacket sounds best. You are not meant to be noticed or memorable because it is not about you. I'm sorry you have this occasion. I guess it happens to us all at some time & unfortunately it is the least fun to dress for.

Thank you all! I had not thought through the coat vs jacket thing but I think a coat would be more appropriate. This is when I need a regular "dress up" coat. I have a black one that I hope will do--i haven't worn it in a few years. Black and navy it will be.

Sorry for my late reply, Lynn. May I suggest sheer black hose, pumps in black or animal print, and a wool coat to wear over the dress.
