Ask Angie and others: fitted denim jacket, or boyfriend sized?

I'm in a little quandry. I have always wanted a super fitted denim jacket in a great vintage wash. I bought one at GAP, very fitted. Looks best open, is almost too snug when buttoned.

No sooner do I buy my super tiny denim jacket, than I see a "boyfriend" sized denim jacket in the new issue of Elle magazine. Which got me thinking. Should I go up a couple of sizes this season? Is fitted passé?

I guess my question would be: Should a good denim jacket be fitted or baggy this season if you had to pick one?

Fitted is not passé. Not at all.

There is room for both silhouettes. I wear all my denim jackets tailored. And one is shrunken. And the most recent mixed media denim jacket is on the fluid side is tailored. Hope that helps.

I am not very fashion-forward, but I would go for a fitted version, as I think it would look nice over fluid tops and dresses, and also give you more seasons. But you are more fashion-forward I think, so I would say the boyfriend is likely the trendier fit.

I have it on good authority (ahem, Angie) that fluidity is the catch-cry if the season so I suspect that the boyfriend styles are the modern way to wear a denim jacket..... But I guess it depends what flatters you most. Looking fabulous is never passé, darling....!

PS I recently bought a fitted denim jacket, too- snap!

Depends on what you want to wear it with, I think. I wear mine mostly with dresses and skirts, or sometimes crops, but more rarely with long pants, so shrunken works best for me.

I think you need a fitted one for roomier bottoms and a boyfriend one for more fitted bottoms. Or one or the other, depending on what you'd like to wear it with.

If you do boyfriend fit on top I guess you would need a slimmer pant shape on bottom and vice versa. With a tiny fitted jacket it's easier to do BF pants and fluffy or Aline skirts. I almost think that unless you go around in "high fashion mode" most of the time that having a big denim jacket can be a big misstep. For instance, when you are running to the store in workout gear and sneakers, I think a bigger jacket would look not so good. However, if you had a real "outfit" on, with heels, a killer bag and good hair, the big jacket might look more hip.

I'm currently debating this myself-- I loved a Lucky mag this fall with a oversized denim jacket over a black sweater paired with an orange fedora and can see myself wearing it casually on the weekend too. However, for summer I mostly am on the lookout for something tailored to wear with skirts and dresses. YMMV
