Waving to Angie for her Nordstrom round-up post in which this appeared.
Saw these Topshop culottes and lost my mind, apparently. Triggers were, sit
at real waist, nice set-in waistband, pleats and drape, looked like they might fit.
Also, the color was intriguingly “neutral” or perhaps trans-seasonal for me—can't wear in winter, but could skew spring, summer, fall
with the right tops and accent colors. Price was right for something that might
not see frequent wears because of...maybe not working out!
Shown with just a first foray into an assortment of footwear and
tops. Did not show higher-heeled dressy pumps
because I’m pretty sure those work fine for the right effect, but only wearable
limited occasions. Also, summer casual
would not be too hard, as a chunky sandal is pretty easy, but here closed-toe
is a need. So the focus is to try out combinations that I could wear for hours,
but move away from the frump. I have my opinions on what appeases my “poison
eye” vs. feels too far out but will see what you think.
1: Boxy sweater worn out, low-heeled sl. pointy shoe. 2: Thinner sweater tucked in. 3: Linen T in near-match 4: Cardi tucked, playing with Clarks boots 5:With slipper loafer 6: Spring look with sandal 7: Long merino sweater belted, Munro boot. 8: Born red pump 9. Cream loafer--looks too pale. Need to try black & cream loafer.
10: shown hiked up about an inch or so for length question.
A key question is, would I wear these to work or just for
play? The black tops and black
low-heeled footwear would work, I think. I can keep these just for fun, since I
can SYC for casual ensembles, but might like to try "real" outfit.
Second question is, length. Shown full-length except 10 is a tad shorter. Would need to pin to some different lengths. I'm tempted to
just leave longish. Just below knee is too short for the effect, I think, though
that’s what I used to think I would choose. But please chime in. Can try pinning up
Third question is, just because I like waistbands, etc, doesn’t
mean that these culottes should be used to achieve that. Perhaps I should stick with “the usual
suspects” in skirts and trousers. How do you tell if you’re having fun, or
looking foolish? But, since I’ve been wearing newer versions of pleats and
high-waists with tucked-in tops when others do not, I think of that as part of
“my” style and so the culotte fringe is part of that, whereas some other more
mainstream trendy styles are not.
What say the experts and chimers-in?
