I have never owned a pair of Docs, but I have always admired the look on you and others. I just browsed their website (thanks to Shannon's recent post on some cute white oxfords), and I saw these beauties.

I have been looking for some comfy, walkable black and white animal print booties for a while now. I looove how these look. What do you think?

I am such a newbie with these--I would like to be able to wear them with skirts/dresses, rather than just skinnies. I know Jean and others wear their lace-up Docs with skirts--does the pattern on these make them extra-wacky and a no-no with skirts/dresses, in your opinion?

Oh are these good looking! No docs knowledge, wondering how calf hair works in the rain. I have a pair of zebra print booties that I have been afraid to break out because of this. Hope it is a thumbs up.

I think they're too clunky to wear with anything except pants, but I have a bias toward dress shoes with skirts and dresses!

I have no experience with Docs but these are gorgeous, Jonesy. I am sure you you should be able to incorporate them into your style perfectly!

You have a great sense of style for sure, but I do not like calf hair at all. I'm a vegetarian and I'm sensitive to seeing calf hair.

Jonesy I have been spending a bit of time on line perusing the Dr Martens range and I love these. I think you could make this work with a variety of looks (pants, skirts, dresses). I am interested to see what Angie says, but these look like they could work in your wardrobe.

Welcome to the world of Docs! I've been committed for 23 years and have never looked back.

I think the neutral pattern is versatile.

I have two ultra hip clients in their 40's who pull off this look with dresses and skirts as well as trousers and jeans. I have every confidence that you will too, Jonesy

Warning: Docs need to be broken in before they feel like slippers. They will probably not feet comfy straight off the bat. (This *is* my famous fussy feet talking).

Jonesy, I just want to say that I hope I didn't offend you with my joke, now that I think about it. I like the polka dots, but the calf hair I think is a very particular taste.

Such a mix of interesting thoughts on these! Angie, thanks for your input--I really appreciate it. I have heard about the break-in period, so I was expecting that. These are pretty $$ so I will have to think on them a bit more before I pull the trigger.

You know, I hadn't even thought about the cow hair thing as an issue...I don't eat mammals (only birds and fish) but I do wear leather shoes and have leather bags, but I draw the line at leather and fur coats. I guess I was putting this material in the leather camp rather than the fur camp, if that makes any sense, but I see that it can be perceived as wrong or distasteful to some...Interesting to ponder.

Hadn't thought about the leg hair analogy at all, but I do appreciate your take, Isabel :).

I have never really loved the somewhat translucent brownish sole on most Docs, so I really liked that these had black solid soles, and I love the pattern (I would enjoy pattern mixing with these). I will have to think about these some more, and how I might wear them.

BTW, all leather looks "furry" to start off with. This is leather in it's natural state and used on the right side.

Sorry for the enabling Jonesy! Now that I've gotten my second pair of Docs and am already eyeing the summer oxford ones, I can vouch for the comfort level. Yes, breaking in is required but for me, is so worth it. I can see myself following in Angie's footsteps and becoming a long-term fan of Docs!

FWIW, I really like the ones you've posted - I think they're hip and edgy and can work in many different ways.

Yes, Angie, that's what I was thinking about the material...seems like it would be pretty durable since cows do spend most of their lives outside in the elements :).

I love them, and I think you could wear yours with skirts and dresses for sure.

I agree with you about the colour of the soles on most Docs. I used to wear Docs and that was the one thing that bugged me about many of the styles.

Thanks Suz! I see I'm not the only one with slight issues with the classic Doc soles :). It's funny, I totally don't even notice them on Angie and others, but for me it was always an issue...strange.

Thanks Anna and Melllls! I found this pic from a recent Madewell ad look, featuring the same Docs but with reverse coloring (off-white with black spots, same calf hair). I really like them paired with brights like this.

I think you could rock them-- leather is naturally furry-- but then again, I am a card carrying member of the "animal killers" club.

FYI-- I recently had my wallet stolen, only to have it mailed back to me (sans cash, but with everything else including cards intact). I personally think they saw my hunter's safety card and gun permit and decided not to make me too angry.

FWIW, I LOVE them. I think the Madewell ad shows their versatility. They *almost* look like a neutral. The calf hair doesn't bother me--I think the texture is kind of fun.

Posting late here again (as passenger) in the car, Jonesy, and I love them and think your ideas to wear them with brights will create an uber-cool look on you. I don't eat beef, but I still wear leather. I especially like the second photo you posted, but I liked them even before seeing them. Due to my tastes, I'd probably get the white with black, and I can see why you'd be drawn to the former. Looking forward to seeing them on your feet.

Thanks, Scarlet and Vicki! I really like the lighter ones too, but I worry about the white getting dingy faster, plus I like the black sole on the black ones.
