Ask Angie and others - Pashminas - yes/no?

Hello All, I'm just wondering if Pashminas are still stylish? I have a sleeveless black dress that needs a bit of coverage for an upcoming evening event. All advice gratefully received!

I'll be interested to see what everyone says! I think of them as a timeless, functional classic anymore. They aren't fashion forward by any means, but they do a great job of keeping you warm and hanging out in the background while letting your outfit shine. If they are voted off the island, I'm gonna be really sad!

Eh, pashminas - I wouldn't say they're stylish for evening formals. But they are expected.

A wrap with substance, like a brocade, or faux fur has more personality than a pashmina. I'd opt for a tuxedo jacket. Pashiminas are scarves, at the end of the day.

It's tricky not to have a pashmina look like a blanket clutched about the shoulders. When I had one, I only wore it when I was freezing on an air-conditioned train. It functioned exactly as a blanket clutched around me for warmth -- and looked that way.

Thanks ladies for your wise words. I would be too hot wearing a jacket over the dress but maybe I can come up with something more interesting than a droopy scarf. I hate investing in evening wear as I use it so seldom.

I vote yay for gauzy pashminas during summer. I wore a bright open weave scarf wrapped around my shoulders during a summer wedding last year and I felt "cool".

What about a printed pashmina? I have a b/w patterned one that is fun to add some personality to all-black outfits, etc.

Printed pashminas are better. Summer versions with texture like Sylvie is describing are better too.

I have a thick, quilted black and silver brocade shawl that I use instead of a pashmina. It's a lot more rigid and geometric and does not drape. I prefer that look to a flowing scarf that acts like a shawl. I also have a retro shawl with sequins. It's like netting. It does not keep you warm, but it adds a dramatic period element to a dress.

I think it depends on what you are wearing and HOW you wear it. I wore one in a beautiful deep teal with a plum chiffon dress and aqua clutch last month to an evening event. It was anchored over one shoulder, draped diagonally across my back and wrapped around my forearms. It was stunning.
