Ask Angie: (and everyone) Seen any good fishermen sweaters?

I have been thinking about a new fisherman sweater lately. My last one is long retired, and I like the idea of one for the upcoming cold weather.

Here's what I'd like:

- not too heavy, or overly chunky (I prefer my layers not too thick or warm)
- slightly oversized but not huge, something with ease but not bulk
- not itchy
- probably not a turtleneck, but I wouldn't rule it out -- it would have to be just right

Any recommendations?

Your quest sounds similar to mine! Simple, not boring, not too heavy but substantial enough to wear without layers if wanted. I ended up with this one from BR:

It is from the Heritage collection which I find runs slightly smaller (my usual BR size is small and I ended up with a medium). Sadly the Heritage collection is usually not included in their weekly % off deals.

I also considered this one from Anthro but the gray color matched the bags under my eyes.

Although my kids have long outgrown Hanna Andersson, I remain a huge fan of her quality and have purchased a couple of adult items over the years. In fact, I just received the Leaving for Paris Cardigan in black and absolutely love it.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'm surprising myself by liking the LLBean one best so far. The BR one is really appealing, but the cable pattern would probably not play well on my chest -- I have to be careful about cabling.

I'd like one in cream or white.

Lemming at work here. I am pondering the LL Bean one as well. I purchased the stripe sweater last year from them (the one Suz has) and have worn it to death. It was my first LLB item and the quality has been great. I do have an original Irish cableknit sweater, a gift long ago from DH, but darn if it isn't the itchiest item in the world.

Uniqlo has a nice cable-knit sweater, although I'll warn that the "natural" color is definitely more taupe than the cream it appears online.

I think they were trending harder last year. You might have to go the more traditional route this season. I got mine from Net-a-porter last year, but this year they have very few on their website, or they're insanely expensive.

They are so cozy and seem like a must have at least in my book. i am holding out for the Ireland trip next October...I did purchase the boyfriend cardigan from ebay which will do for now. So many choices given by forum members , can't wait to see what you end up with.

Angie, to me an Aran sweater is the same thing as a fisherman sweater. Are they two different things to you?

Someone mentioned Hanna Andersson and it jogged my memory - I meant to check the J Crew Crewcuts kids' sweaters this year. And, to my surprise, there's one that might be my ideal for this winter:

Almost too many trends - baseball colorblock, fisherman cables - but cute. I fit a boy's 14 there sometimes. (If it's a useful comparison for anyone, it's about a women's XS but with wider arms, which is great for me. Sometimes too blocky through the chest, unsurprisingly.) And the size 14s always sell out before other sizes, so I'm sure I'm not the only small woman who's noticed this!

Very different.

An Aran is cabled. The Irish Aran is iconic and unisex, and usually in a shade of off white:

A Fisherman is made of fishermans rib stitch, and sans the cables. Chunky, but plain.

Personally, I prefer the cables. I find Fishermans a dash too masculine at times, unless they have a cheeky cropped element.

I found my last one - aran cable turtle neck on etsy - 100% wool (which I adore) - but have also had good luck getting my guenseys at woolovers in the UK -

Not what you're looking for but I got this lovely one in Ireland this past summer. It checked most of my boxes...cardigan, not too chunky, zip, a nice colour. I would never wear the hood up but it has a nice effect when laid down the back of the cardigan.

Interesting. I've been mistakenly referring to Aran sweaters as Fishermans. Glad to know the distinction!

Hi, Janet. Glory's thread reminded me of your quest. I don't know if this would fit within your criteria, but this is an awesome sweater that you might love. Maybe you could hunt it down outside of Nordstrom in a non-petite size. It's usually us Ps who have trouble finding stuff! If I were the type who could handle any sort of bulk in a sweater, I would be considering it.
