Dear Angie - (and all)

I am afraid our friend Alaskagirl has been enabling me. She has searched out and located the most amazing navy jacket.

I do not own a leather jacket.

Do I "need" a leather jacket?

Does anyone?

But you know...I am interested. If I can square the cost.

So - have you seen this in person? Can you guess about the fit? The sole reviewer mentions that it is snug in the shoulders but she does not give much information about herself so it is difficult to judge from that alone.

Question: If it were not to fit or look right, how long would I have after purchase to return in store to Nordstrom's? It might be a while before I could get back across the border.

I bet another forum member might also buy it off you, depending on sizing. Otherwise, Nordstrom has no limit on return time to my knowledge.

Nordstrom has a wonderful return policy; basically there is no time limit to return (or limits on the condition of the clothing when it's returned).

Suz, I have a leather jacket almost identical in looks to this by the Canadian designers Bod & Christensen and I really love it. I don't know how heavy weight this Trouve one is. Although lined, mine is not an outdoor cold winter weather jacket, but because of the cut and knit panels that keep it sleek and fitted yet stretch and vent body heat, it's perfect and comfortable for wearing indoors, which makes it much more versatile IMO. I do wear outside as a coat in cool weather over a light layer.

If you don't have one you should get this. A leather jacket is a good option for canadian springs,imo.

I just had an online conversation with a Nordstrom specialist, and she suggested going up a size. So if you are a 2 or a 4 in jackets, you should go with to the S(4-6). If you are a 6, you would go up to the M. Does that make sense?

You know, Suz, I'd take the risk. That jacket would work so well to add that bit of edge that you are looking for in your outfits without being over the top. And, personally, I've always thought that navy works with more colors and seasons than black or brown. You can pair navy and black in the winter, navy and cognac in the fall, and navy and lime green in the spring-- just as examples.

And, because Nordstrom's is so good about returns, the worst case scenerio is that you might have to pay a few $$ to ship it back, if you can't get down to a US store this fall or winter. I'd also think that there might be a few YLFers who would be interested in taking it off your hands if the fit wasn't quite right. So, really, what do you have to lose?

With regard to sizing, I'd go with your instincts. You could also take a shoulder measurement and give Nordies a call. I did this last year when I was ordering online and the person was very helpful.

It's a bit of a risk, but, if it works, what a payoff!

Suz I haven't gotten to know your style yet but I think everyone needs a leather jacket. Nordstrom has a wonderful return policy so there is no rush to return it. I would call & ask if they can measure it for you too to help because what if they sell out of the right size while you are dealing with the wrong size.

I think it is a beautiful jacket & I don't know your style but if you're concerned about the investment should you look for a style more classic?

ETA: I've realized that this particular model seems to model everything I love - maybe because she is Asian, I'm getting fooled into thinking I'll look as good as she does?

I actually said aloud under my breath, "that's gorgeous." I think it's right up the alley of distinctive pieces you are looking to explore.
As for needing a leather jacket, I did without until in my 40's as well. I just got mine a couple months ago (waiting for the weather to change). We don't 'need' them but we don't 'need' a denim jacket either. Life is more fun with them though

I have been on the hunt for a cascade jacket myself and pinned this on my board a few days ago. I will be in San Francisco thursday through Sunday, I can check it out if you like (and I just might pick one up for myself).

It's a beautiful jacket Suz and it seems to have the qualities you were looking for in your last two thrifted pieces that weren't quite right. I think the leather actually works really well for this as it has just a suggestion of drape with structure being the backbone.

How much of the year do you think you would wear it? Would it be too cold using as a blazer in winter?

Suz, yes you need a leather jacket! This one seems perfect for the direction you're wanting to take your style. It looks arty but structured, unique but not bizarre. I think you should try it! Crossing my fingers that it fits!

Oh my goodness, you are all such wonderful enablers. I have it in my shopping cart and will probably pull the trigger this evening. I am going through every item that I'm throwing in that cart and giving it the Angie: Item/Outfits/Capsule test, and also asking myself: Does this take me in the style direction I want to go? The jacket definitely fits the bill. I have a few other pieces in the cart I am less sure about.

I've also just been through my closet looking at what I have for fall that is still in reasonable shape - which I realize is not a whole lot. So I feel less guilty about making a few purchases.

Though if I could find the perfect layering Ts I'd be in heaven, because I do depend on those a lot in fall/winter to put outfits together.

Una, in North American sizes, I usually take a 4P. So I am going to go up to the small in this. I don't have thick shoulders (and I have zero bust) but I do have WIDE shoulders, if that makes sense. The bones are relatively small but they are widely spaced.

Freckles, from the looks of this jacket I'd wear it as indoor wear in winter (over a top) and as indoor/outdoor wear in fall and spring.

It is great advice to call Nordies to ask them to measure, Gaylene and Elle. I should probably do that.

Denise, I'd love if you took a look! I will probably order tonight though to make sure it gets to the relatives' place in time.

Ummm, so Suz...(awkward)...would you mind terribly if I copy catted you with this jacket? I'm absolutely in love with it too! And I have valuable information to exchange for the privilege of being your jacket twin....

They had this in stock at my local, so at lunch I dropped in to try it on. Innocently. Entirely out of good will because you, Suz, are so tirelessly positive and wonderful and a great blog forum contributor who has helped me on more than one occasion. Then all my good intentions went to..heck...because I tried this jacket on and loved it! But at least I can offer valuable fit information after a first hand try one. As to fit: This fit pretty standard across the shoulders and body. It runs thin through the arms. I am usually between a medium and a large in most items, generally choosing a medium for a very fitted look. In this one, I had to size up to large to make it work for my arms. However, I have huge mommy arms. I would guess that you could wear your normal size in this, because you have lovely slim arms. However, if you want to layer say a tissue weight cashmere sweater and tee under it, then the larger of your normal size range should work. Does that help?

Una, yup, tried it on! Quality is very decent for the price. It looks nice, expensive nice. Very thin leather. The color is almost a little gray, which I love in navy. It pushes it toward denim, rather than straight blue. Color dye job looked consistent and even. Shoulder fit was good for us IT girls. I know that you are an IT like me and that you have beautiful strong arms from rock climbing, so I'd choose the larger of your two regular sizes. The side panels are stretchy, though, so they could stretch. The SA seemed to think even the medium would relax enough for me. BIG CONSIDERATION: What might be a killer for the love between this jacket and you is the sleeve length. You're petite, right? The sleeves are long. I'm 5'5" and they are very long on me. If Suz gives me the okay to be her jacket twin, I'll check into alterations tonight.

K can shop - Of COURSE I don't mind a jacket twin. Heck, I don't mind YLF jacket octuplets, if it comes to that! We should ALL have this gorgeous jacket. As long as we don't all order the same size!!

Thank you so much for those fit details. It sounds as if I am really better off with the small. I'll bet I need to shorten the sleeves, which will add to the already considerable cost, alas. But not much to be done about that.
