Ask Angie & All: K/R Thrifted Ralph Lauren Jersey Blazer

Hi all,

I dropped by the Salvation Army on my way home from work today and stumbled upon a navy Polo Ralph Lauren knit blazer in 96% wool with tipped edges. It fits me really well!

I don't have time for photos of me in it right now, but I found the very same model on the web. I guess it must be about 3-4 years old. Could I remove the emblem pocket, or would I ruin the blazer then? How do I style this kind of classic jacket to keep it updated and current? I like modern classic a lot, but not only classic.

Do you think it is worth keeping? I like preppy style, but is this too much for me? Is it timeless, or dated?

ETA: I don't think the patch pocket is the main issue, sorry for bringing that up. It belongs to the style anyway, and is probably very hard to remove without trace. My main concern is wether it is dated or not, and wether you think it is a good choice for my style

I think you may ruin the blazer if you remove the emblem. A tailor would know for sure.

No harm in trying it out with a few outfits to see how you feel in it Ingunn. I think you just might be able to rock it with a pair of jeans but it may be too preppy in your eyes.

I'm probably not the best person to answer this since I've always had a secret preppy identify...but I kinda love it as is. I don't think you'd be able to remove the emblem without ruining the blazer - I'm pretty sure it would show where the emblem had been.

I think you'd need to decide how much preppy you're willing to embrace.

I also think keeping the emblem will be necessary if you don't want to destroy the blazer. I tink it might work well for you paired with the right items, but like the others said - you have to decide how preppy you want to go.

Is the emblem sewn on like a badge? Sometimes they are very firmly attached and sometimes only tacked on. But it might be brighter underneath (if the fabric has faded at all). You'd look great in this.

If you dislike the emblem and it can't be removed without damaging the jacket,maybe that whole pocket could be removed. It is a patch pocket, no?

ETA: just realized the jacket's jersey -- I think that will make removing the emblem more difficult.

Thank you for responding! I guess this is kind of rushed, I should have shown you the fit on me. It is good, not too wide in the shoulders, and not too long in the torso or sleeves. I agree that removing the emblem pocket isn't such a great idea.

I think tipped jackets are really cool, and I have been looking for one. But what I had in mind was more something like Sveta's yellow blazer because it is so fun and on trend. This one is a preppy icon. Can I do that? I need something unexpected with it, but what do I have to fill that role in the outfits? My jeans are all quite classic, too.

Thank you, Liz! How interesting. I didn't find it anywhere is stores when I searched for it. This updated version has only one button and is more fitted, but otherwise they are much the same.

I love finding RL things on sale or re-sale, but for me the emblems are a deal-breaker, so I avoid all items with that logo. For jackets especially with the prominent pocket patch, I don't want the logo to be the focal point and I think it makes the item less versatile, because then it's not just preppy but "branded". It may not be so for you, so take that FWIW. It is hard to pass up good fit & style but I've made that choice with RL clothing and handbags.

Even before seeing Liz's link, the thing that makes your version dated to my eye is the three buttons. A 2-button or 1 button version would be more current.

I think this jacket is not dated, esepcially as Liz noted. I think the tipping is very much on trend at the moment. I have seen A LOT of tipped jackets out and about.

I think you should give it a whirl with a few of your pieces. It could really be an outstanding piece, and in my experience Ralph Lauren pieces tend to be pretty well made.

RL makes some really nice clothing. This looks like a very classic blazer in a nautical style. I'm not a fan of emblems on anything I wear myself, but it depends on rather *you* mind the emblem. It also depends on rather you like the preppy nautical style with shiny buttons, etc. I think you could juxtapose it with some other items but you'd have to experiment a bit. Could be a fun exercise...

I don't know about this Ingunn. To me this jacket looks pretty dated - the 3 button closure bothers me - but maybe that's just classic, rather than dated? I also have a strong aversion to any type of logo patches, so that would be a deterrant for me. I'd like to see it with some of your wardrobe items to see how you would style this though - you might be able to come up with some great combinations!

I agree that emblems and logos are deal breakers in general, but I think these jackets could be an exception because the emblem is a part f their style. I'm frankly not sure, though. I also feel that the shiny buttons are a step outside my comfort zone. But on the other hand - it is a cheap, thrifted jacket, and it could be fun playing a little with it. I might have some time for this later this week. It is a 10 days open return, so I have time to do this and still return it. As the number of buttons are concerned, I'm not too bothered by that. I think as long as the overall shape is current (which it is), I can live with the three buttons.

I quite like this and think you can pull it off with the right pants and shoes. I feel it is worth a try. I am not sure about removing the patch or the pocket - I think that it would not be seamless.

I think it would be fun to try mixing it and posting some pics, Ingunn; its fab to find good quality in your perfect size and if you decide to pass it on again there's no harm done.
