Ascetic August: How's it going?

I'm heading to CT at the end of the week and will be stopping at Zara to try on a few things. I'm approaching the trip as a "try-on" only .... as I am really hoping to make it all the way to 8/31 without buying. But I think it will be difficult. (See below for what I found today. )

How is it going for everyone else who is doing this?

So far so good! I have not bought a single thing, either for myself or for a family member.

I will be refreshing DHs tee shirts here shortly, but it am not counting that. It's not a "fill in for buying myself something" as I am literally replacing tees I found with holes in them. He wear a tee shirt and jeans daily, so he really does need them.

Doing fine! I started a day late, so I'll end a day late, but my summer wardrobe is in good shape, and I have fab new pieces I'm looking forward to wearing in the fall.

Picking up my new eyeglasses today, which helps.

I was tempted by some cute plaid shirts in Target of all places. The plaid actually matches up in the front, and the inside and elbow patches have a complementing gingham. (see pic) We'll see if they're still around (or maybe on sale!) in September.

I tried a version of that vest in the spring. I loved it but returned it as an unneeded item -- more of a want. I can see using one a lot in the fall, though. But it isn't really warm....that's the trouble.

Love the jacket, too.

So far, I'm holding out well, if picking up my (July) NAS purchases does not count as shopping.

I am planning not to shop until mid-September, in fact. But since I tend to shop in binges, this is not even an issue for me.

For me, it's not stopping myself from constant shopping that's the problem -- that's not my shopping style. For me, it's stopping myself from buying too much when I do decide to buy. Like in Juggernaut June.

Ha. Busted. I did some last-minute NAS and also my leather skirt and such locally.
OTOH, I really like what I got, and much more of a theme or focus seemed to be emerging that galvanized me to just go ahead and do a wardrobe review, and toss out quite a few items, mostly pre YLF, but some "misses" from the past couple of years as well. This was rather unexpecte, since it was not "time" (I usually feel inspired more around Labor Day). I think my wardrobe is actually shrinking for the first time and my understanding of what works, and doesn't, is improving.

Not sure if I will be on full Spartan September, but I'm excited about using what I have and being very picky about having any new items really earn their keep in specific ways. For me these might be basic items that help me "get out of the door" in the morning--typically unfussy and dependable; warm if we're talking winter-- or an item that strategically updates and elevates classic items that I still like but can look too predictable.

Hanging in there! I even returned some items I thought I was going to keep so I am in a deficit with my one-in, one-out rule. I am adding things to consider in September. Taking a break is helping me figure out my wardrobe holes. Love it.

So far so good for me - but I've been on vacation with extended family for the last few days so I haven't been able to shop much anyway! At least not for clothes; I did buy a framed photograph and some books when tourist-ing.

I'm doing fine, but we're only 1/3 through. Instead, I've bought shoes, converter/adapter, and luggage locks for DD and printer toner for DH. Gotta see my UPS guy somehow! I also think I may need a new router, so that's another UPS order. . . .

And, hmmm, I have my Dansko Pro replacement clogs lined up for Triple Points days in September. . . .

I bought underwear. And culottes. Otherwise I'm OK, but going to Montreal at end of August. It'll be tough not to shop there. So I don't think I'll even try.

I have bought a couple of HEWIs (fitted black skirt, chinos). The chinos were bought with my BR reward points and cost me about $1. The skirt was final sale and was about half off. And then I bought a $3 belt at Goodwill. So I'm not doing too bad.

I should say that I also ordered a pair of penny loafers, which might be pushing the HEWI designation. However, I just noticed today that my go-to shoes (OK, comfort shoes) are getting worn out—the insole peeled off when I took my foot out. Yikes. So maybe the loafers will be my replacement!

I'm doing well, considering that I placed a final NAS order on July 31 and am counting that as a July purchase. But I am returning the most expensive of the 3 pieces I ordered and I also am returning 2 dresses I bought through Amazon. With the exception of a pair of boots I've been considering, I don't even have any purchases planned yet for September. So my budget might recover from July!

For me, backing off spending just makes me more thoughtful. So I applaud you all, whether you've bought nothing, or a HEWI, or something on super sale, or a belt from Goodwill, or a router (haha!). I would like to make it to Aug 31 but if I don't the world will not end, and I will know that it was a really good purchase.

DonnaF, I hear you about the UPS man. I'm sure he really misses me, and especially misses trying to escape my overly friendly dogs.

I'm still on track! And I need to be very clear that my track is "No PURCHASING in August". So when you see me post the first of my NAS purchases which were waiting for me at work today (arrived Friday, I was on vacation last week and Monday) I am NOT cheating
