Mr Skunky (not his real name) is an OCD licker of his front paw. The boys had to go to the vet for immunizations anyway, so I mentioned to the vet that he had started limping a couple days earlier. She prescribed an ointment for the spot. His licking had thickened the skin. To keep him from licking the ointment off the spot, we needed to put a bootie on it. First he started licking the bootie. Then he started licking the other paw. Well, it look a whole week, but he finally figured out how to undo velcro. No more bootie for Mr Skunky.

Lol. Lilypup wouldn’t do no bootie either. She was hilarious with her cone after realising pretending to be paralysed wouldn’t make it come off. Then she started whacking everything with it. Lol.

These terriers are very clever.......I know, because we've had three. Our little one would probably undo the velcro too.

Rachy, Mr Skunky is a dear, but a stubborn one. He has a jacket, and when we put it on him, he acts as though he were paralyzed. He would probably act the same way with the bootie, but then he wouldn’t get food or treats.

Angie, he’s had a cone before. Because if the size of his snout, it was ginormous! I hope we don’t have to do that again, either.

Smittie, I think several years ago he genuinely hurt his foot and started licking it. It has become a habit and a way to calm/occupy himself. A neighbor had a dog that did the same thing, and had to wear a sock for years. If we have to go back to a bootie, I might try using a safety pin or something. Suggestions welcome!

Poor doggy - so adorable!
Pets do have their own health problems ( often expensive ones ), bad habits and then bring enormous joy/ray of sunlight/therapeutic feelings to all of us.
Bootie is very cute too .

This makes me think of thumb-sucking in children, and how a long time ago they used to paint their thumbs with quinine because it had a bad taste. Not sure if this is done any more, but I wonder if there's something you could put on his paw that would make it a less desirable place to lick.

Xtabay, I think you’ve hit the nail on the head. We have a spray called Bitter Apple. I wonder if I should try it. I’ll call the vet tomorrow.

Here he is relaxing. You can see how giant his head is. He would be a big dog if it weren’t for his three inch legs.

Mr Skunky looks about as happy as Miss Mollie would with a bootie on. What a clever boy to figure out how to get rid of the booty LOL

You have to admire the terrier spirit, they are just so undeterred by any obstacle. Only the cone head treatment stops Bijou, she gets very indignant when she gets that treatment. Hoping Mr Skunky recovers soon.

Cindy, he was mad looking in the second picture, but it was because he had just had a bath. We don’t usually bathe him because the groomer does that, but he was especially filthy. BTW, he’s not a fan of baths, either.

Bijou, you certainly have an insight into the terrier mind. Never give up could be their motto. Our previous Jack Russell spent over seven hours trying to get a squirrel from under our shed.

He is so cute and a bit of naughtiness can be delightful. At least his short legs must keep him from stealing your food off the table.

Taylor, sometimes we wonder about him. Mostly he is motivated by food, but he also loves balls and sticks. By contrast, our Jack Russell is motivated solely by rodents.

Suntiger, I’m glad to hear it worked. However, I.can’t find it. My pantry is kind of a mess, so I may need to clean it up to fnd it.

Joy, you’re so right. If your dog is perfect, you don’t have any good stories!

Duct tape is my suggestion. On the bootie, not the paw.

Spread the toes and paw pads apart. If there is any redness, tiny lumps it is almost always a sign of inflammation from allergies, either weather, food or household environment. Would need foot soaks or spray, we've had best luck with Zymox (available at Amazon, Walmart, etc) Try and get 1% strength, it works best. We went to doggeh dermatologist for 2 yrs, full allergy panel. Found our girl is allergic to cotton material (goodbye sheets, bedspread, favorite robe- she sleeps with me, NOT giving up my jeans, but toss a throw over me if she sits nearby). Dirt (!)household dust, certain types of grass and most meats. Stopped shots after 2 yrs, wasn't helping and she seemed worse actually. Needs bathing every 2-3 weeks with special oatmeal based hypoallergenic soap, double rinses. Food makes a huge difference too, one from her Dermatologist cleared up allergies great but gave her a stomach ulcer, OY! Also deals with a lot of ear yeast infections. Good luck!

Brooklynsparrow, thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. The vet thinks he might have allergies. She originally said avoid beef, chicken, dairy, soy, wheat and corn. Okay. We found a mix of duck and potato. But then advisories came out and said avoid grain free and any mix with legumes. So we switched to Royal Canin (Jack Russell formula). This probably has everything we were told to avoid. But at least they’re not dying.

I’ll look for Xymox.
