I went shopping today!

So I don't own any white tees. In fact, I've never had one, because I always thought (and was told) that a white tee makes me look bigger and more busty. Last year I bought a white woven top and it quickly became a favorite....and I decided to forget about the no-white-on-top rule and go find more whites for summer.

I had a gift card for H&M, so that's where I went. And I got a lot of great great basics! Things I didn't even know were missing from my life!

#1: I love this oversized tee so much, I also got it in black (#2). It fits well and looks good with jeans, fitted skirts & shorts. Almost all of my tops & tees are printed...I was beginning to miss something just 'basic' so I can add a nice scarf and bag to give the outfit some 'character'. I love both tees.

#3-4: I love the idea of white tee SO MUCH, I got another oversized one. Well, in my defense, it was on 40% discount so dirt cheap, and this one has a straight hem (the other has a rounded hem) and is a bit shorter, so better for skirts. Plus I'm thinking - whites are hard to maintain. Better to have two! PS: I'm already wearing this outfit for the remainder of the day!

#5-6: I bought this whole outfit. Love the top...another white but this one is woven. Love the black piping as I have tons of white & black skirts it'll go with. Love this A-line skirt. It's a great fabric, has good weight and is EXCELLENT on anyone looking for a good summer skirt that doesn't require ironing. I wear a UK size 12 on the bottom but the L in this skirt was too big. I bought a M.

#7: I also bought this outfit. This is a basic black woven top....another basic I really needed to go with all my summer skirts. I love the short, fitted printed skirt and while I do have a B&W print skirt, that one is a woven and not easy to wear at home. This is knitted and so so comfy. I'll wear this anywhere!

#8: Again, I don't have basic plain tees. I don't know WHY?! Everything I have seems to either be florals, stripes or polka dots! Needed a basic grey and this is it.

#9: I got the sneakers!!! Inge pointed out these for me when I was looking for Snakeprint sneakers. I thought I'd like a darker Snake print, but in reality, this lighter color is better for me. Super comfy!

Nothing is properly styled. I just got back from shopping and as you can see, the dogs are all over me and my hair is a mess....but I still had to show you these.

I hope you guys will comment and tell me what looks good, what doesn't, and how to start wearing my basics in different ways!

I love #5 - and I want to pet your dog! You look smashing in white and I know what you mean about the good old well shaped, not tight tee. Sneakers are terrific too!

Wow you do basics really well. Note to self gets some basic that look Fan freaken Tastic. 1&2 love sometuanout that curved hem that is awesome.

The grey in 8 and the shoes are on point. You do casual basic really really well. Hmmmmmm

Thanks Ledonna. Well, this is basically the very FIRST time I went shopping for basics. I've never done it before, so I'm very pleased to hear that you think I do it well!!! I love the tees in #1&2 too....that curved hem really makes a difference (very evident when you compare it to #3). I wore jeans to shop and the tees looked great with them too.

Btw - I saw some FANTASTIC plus sized clothes at H&M. There was this super super cute tshirt that was light grey with small black butterflies and I loved it so much! Sadly they only had it from size XXL to 5XL and even the smallest size was too big for me. Some veryyyy flattering blacks, creams and whites too that were only in the plus size range. I wish they started their plus-size range at size XL so I could've bought some.....the lengths & necklines were far more flattering than regular sizes. I can't find a picture of the grey tee, but I LOVED these two tops

I love all these basics. The white t and shorts is perfect. I'm sure you will have fun styling all these with accessories but they look fantastic ultra-simple as well, IMO!

Thanks for the info on the plus sizes. I've essentially given up on stores like that. I've got way to much of everything for them but because nod you and how these basics look on you I'm going to go window shopping.

Well this is how I look pretty much every summer day when I'm not dressed for work I don't even OWN a printed t - lol. White is great on you - and against your hair and skin ? ?? I don't know why you don't wear it all the time !!

I think baggy and oversize t's look better with a semi-tuck - and this is based on looking at myself dressed like this for years (t's and cut-offs) . But.....I know you aren't a tucker either . It's one thing I struggle with too . I'm trying to wean myself off of baggy t's and into something with a bit more shape.....but they aren't easy to find.

I love those sneakers on you too - again, great contrast against your skin.

Helena - I very much intend to wear my basics as-is at home. I don't accessorize at all at home.....too fussy. But when I go out in my oversized tee and shorts/jeans, I'll like to add a nice scarf. My scarf collection is getting rather ignored because almost everything in my wardrobe is printed! It'll make for a nice change

LisaP - I know just what you mean about the semi-tuck. And yes, I don't tuck. Ever. I like to wear my pants & skirts high on the waist (I have a short torso) so I can't tuck....the waistband is too close to my bust and if I tuck, I look ridiculous. When low-waist jeans & pants were the norm, I used to Tuck. But not anymore. BUT.....I have this trick. I did buy a couple of basic tees today that I'd like to wear in a semi-tuck or fully tuck look. So I fold in about 2-3 inches (the amount of fabric I'd like to see tucked in) and I put teeny tiny stitches inside. They're spaced apart, about 8 per shirt. They're not really visible....but they hold the shirt at the length I want to wear it. Earlier I used to just fold in my tee but that doesn't stay.....the lil stitches work much better.

Xtabay - thanks, you're very sweet! Little White Dress....now that's a thought! Maybe if I can find the 'right' one (I'm imagining a white eyelet shift dress)----why not?!

Well, t-shirts sound like a very sensible choice for casual wear in your climate, and you probably need a pile of them, because you will wash them often. You look good in white.
I have a preference for #3, I like this neckline and sleeve cut on you.

I have a lot of tshirts (they're in fact the ONLY sensible option in our hot weather) but I didn't have many solid colors. I wear a lot of prints to keep a simple tee+shorts/jeans/skirts outfit a little 'pretty' without needing a 'third' piece. These are a good starting point. I'm craving simplicity these days! And yes, everything is washed after each wear.

I like these, great with the denim shorts. I wear similar all summer long, at home anyway. Love the idea about taking tucks. Hmm, which of my tees could use that...

Solid purchases, Maneera! I like the curved hem with the shorts. Looks good.
I like your idea of wearing scarves with them to dress them up a bit. Add in a nice bag, some bracelets, and fun shoes and you're set.

YES good for you for buying some basic pieces for casual wear. It will expand your wardrobe options for sure, and having those also helps combat feeling too precious about dressier items in casual settings. I am always loathe to spend on those types of pieces because, I mean, there are so many pretties out there! Love the sneaks and the top in #5 especially.

I'm just like you, Maneera -- the majority of my tops are prints, unless they're black -- I have lots of those, too. I love the look of these on you --- it's all in the proportions. When you get that right, the simple neutrals are delightful and casually elegant.

My faves are #2 and #8 for the way they fit and flatter your great figure.

I have to say, I'm so distracted by how much I'm loving your hair that it's hard to focus on the garments!!

These are some great-looking not-so-basic basics, Maneera! I especially like the first two tees, with the shirt-tail hems--I find that shape very flattering. The others look terrific on you, too. I don't see any that aren't likely to pull their weight in your wardrobe. I like the white tee with those white-trimmed denim shorts. Along with the chic slip-on sneakers, that outfit perfectly illustrates how a "basic" look turns into something a little special, a not-so-basic look.

Great simple outfits..you look fab in all of them. I used to have a thing about white tshirts ..actually I still have a thing but those look fabulous on you so I might give plain white shirts a go. Those sneakers look great too. I wear my slip on sneakers everywhere.

I too have always stayed away from white tops as I was also told they are not good for busty women. Thanks to YLF I have embraced white, in tops, bottoms and shoes and am so glad I did. I think white + accessories, like a scarf as you mention, is so sharp. I love white + color so much more than black + color, which surprised me. I think you'll get a lot of use out of these basic tops. Looking forward to see what outfits you create!
