This came up in an Off Topic thread, but I thought it would be of interest here.

The article includes some of the garments and designers Melania's been wearing of late, and a photo of her in a hot pink Dior gown that she recently wore this past weekend.

Thanks, GF. I briefly read the article and have to run, but wanted to quickly chime in to say that I love the long pink Dior gown. It's STUNNING and appropriate for a FLOTUS. I find the red Cape dress a little short, but love that Melania is wearing it with flats.

I had the exact same reaction as Angie. The red dress is a bit short for FLOTUS. The pink gown is lovely and appropriate.

I like both - because of the flats and fit of the red suit I like it. The pink dress is stunning. I like these bold colours on her.

Quite honestly, I think Melania's wardrobe transformation for her position as FLOTUS has done wonders for her style. I think she's becoming much more elegant... let's not forget, I take my cues from Happy Bunny (anyone remember Happy Bunny?) - it's all about me. I gravitate to styles that are about something other than pure aesthetics (I'm not a purist! ) Thus my love of Punk.

...so I wonder if I feel this way because of this tendency.

Also, I think the changes have been subtle, not big, if clear and conscious. Suggests she had the right 'base' to begin with, although it didn't necessarily appeal to me. I have to contemplate more on why my mum thinks Melania knows how to wear clothes, because mum believes that reflects knowing who you are. I mean, what does Melania know about herself?

Melania was a model. There is that.

The pic below was the one that actually made me think that the red cape dress was a little short for a FLOTUS dressier dress. Personally, I think it needed an extra three inches for someone in her position and in this setting. I DO like the dress.

Rachylou -- I think Melania definitely knows herself, and isn't afraid to let us know it. Hence declining to move immediately to DC. Takes strength to break with convention and tradition especially when under intense public scrutiny.

The point about the American relationship with European designers is an interesting one -- somehow wearing Givenchy and Dior doesn't come off as "foreign" -- once a brand hits American soil it is, for better or worse, an American brand to some degree.

That is an EXCELLENT point, LP. Annnnddd... all of a sudden I get her marriage to The Donald. A weak woman could not get on with Donald.

Jackie O faced the problem of European designers and promoting American. She depended on them (European designers) for her look, but... so she just didn't say. She passed her clothes off as American made.

Does everyone remember how Nancy Regan got in a bit of floo-ha for her love of fancy designer stuff period? Can we trace the designer explosion to Nancy? What a thought!

If the red dress was just above the knee would it look as good with the flats? She's got a model figure of course but I'm still not sure she'd get the proportions she's used to, flattery being relative because she'd still look great. I'm all for high profile women wearing FLATS and scratch my head a bit at hemline rules. I remember a ridiculous fuss by some when Michelle Obama was photographed wearing shorts on vacation, the horror!

I think it becomes more of a concern with getting in and out of vehicles, ascending stairs, and breezes. Years ago, a certain royal wore a knee-length dress that was unfortunately no match for a strong gust of wind. As a result of that experience, supposedly small weights are now sewn into her hemlines to prevent another incident from occurring.

Oh, my goodness---I just had a big "wake up" call! I was thinking about the length of the dress, and about my perception (emphasis: MY perception) about the unusual circumstances of having a very young former model as FLOTUS and how the way she dresses is surely a reflection of her youth and her career. Then, I looked at the ages of previous first ladies and BAM!--- Melania is young, but she is OLDER than both Ms. Obama and Ms. Clinton were when they became FLOTUS, and Ms. Kennedy was 31 years old when she became FLOTUS. WOW! It's remarkable how the office ages the occupant, and thus far, his spouse.

We'll she looks nice and was formerly a model. I'm sure she would look great in anything and I'm sure she has a team who thinks about this way in advance like previous 1st Ladies before.

I hope we see more of her. She is a great representative of the face of imagration.

I'm seeing bold color and simple drama as her style choices so far as first lady, and really liking it. Smart of her to choose flats with this hemline, imagine the same dress with heels? Too hoochey for her position as FLOTUS.

Yeah, I think a longer hemline with these flats would be off proportionately. Plus if you take into account the fact that she was traveling to their 'leisure' home, I think she looks appropriate.

Interesting to note the difference (due to lighting?) between Angie's photo of Melania and gradfashionista's photo of her. Her skin tone looks fresh and radiant in one, not so fresh in the other.

That's MY default excuse for looking not so fresh, in person AND in photos - must be poor lighting!!!!!!!

I think the red cape dress would look sensational and better longer, but 2 inches above the knee cap with the same flats. Flattering proportions in tact. This is a dressy dress, and a more formal context.

The way I see it, a FLOTUS can absolutely appropriately wear shorts and casual short dresses on holiday at the beach, pool, on a hike, at a sporting event etc. Just like Michelle Obama did. Different context.

If I were dressing Melania to go her beach home in Florida, I'd have put her in ankle pants, flats and a dressy blouse with accessories.

She seems to be wearing all one colour and very dramatic styles since becoming FLOTUS. I don't know what she wore before because I didn't follow her.
