Aritzia Babaton coat in-store recon

Aritzia was bumpin' (as the kids say) today. I haven't set foot in stores in ages, and had my first day off also in ages, so off to the mall I went. First off, Aritzia has the market locked down for teens and young adults: sweats of all kinds (nice ones, not crappy versions) , shirt jackets , faux leather etc - I admit to swooning a bit over the faux leather stuff. I wanted to try on the Babaton Slouch coat before ordering, and the very helpful young SA was able to find me new stock not yet on the floor in my size. They only bring in the camel and black - I'm looking for the dark foxfire brown .

FYI - in case I'm not the only one who didn't notice this on their website- there is two distinct fabric choices in these coats: the recycled camel, and a regular wool blend. The wool blend is stiffer, and "different" (I'll say less luxe ) looking than the recycled camel hair. Both have that gorgeous heavy topstitching. I tried a size 2, and it was perfect.

Anyway, I'm glad I tried it on before ordering, because although it's a stellar piece, I'm not sure I want that much coat. It was quite long on me (I'm 5'5") and while it would be fine with some boots for added height, I don't wear dresses or skirts anymore, and my lifestyle is more of the running around variety . A knee length coat is perfect for me, and looks better proportionately. I actually had the long coat ready to be ordered at the cash desk - debit machine in front of me ready to tap - and then backed out at the last minute. I never do that - but am glad I did. I'm planning on compiling a charcoal grey scarf/beanie/thick socks /mitts complement as well as a grey/rust print scarf .

Nice choice/decision process! Even though I love the bigger coat, too, I can really see you in the coat you chose. It reads more Lisa P to me, from what I know of your style as well as the practical considerations. Lovely shacket, too!

The Stedman was my choice too, in camel hair, and I love it. It’s an easy fit, looks good open or closed, and it’s perfect over jeans and a sweater, which seems to be my winter uniform these days. I did wear it a couple of times for dressier occasions, and it was great there too.

I don’t think you’ll be disappointed!

I almost bought it last year but slight asymmetry when buttoned didn’t work for me. Hope it would work for you.

Lisa - how awesome!! I think the stedman looks great and it’s a truly perfect length for early fall through cold spring. Color is divine and do you not love the fabrication. The slouch is a lot of coat and will have a shorter season. I have the black everlane cocoon and the Pendleton Darby and this replaced 2 maxi coats but if I needed an all purpose coat I would have made the same choice. The color is amazing. Talk about making winter fun especially with your fab accessories!! Enjoy it. Glad you got to try it in person and make the perfect choice!!!

Irina - no , the Stedman wasn’t in stock yet . Fall stock is just trickling in at this point . I’m going to order it and see how it goes . If it’s too not perfect , I have no qualms returning it . I can’t wait to wear the wooly shirt jacket !! Bring on fall !

Lisa, hope it works, it is a beautiful coat and I loved the stitching on it. I just placed an order for the wooly shirt jacket, the long one in cream. I liked the Natural Tan, kind of deep nude color as well but I do not have any accessories for it, so I settle on cream. We shell see. I’m looking for a casual light wool coat.

Irina - I was really tempted by the long wooly shacket , but I have another cream / neon orange trim quilted coat coming sometime soon so that’s why I chose the shorter length . The deep nude colour is pretty and I did consider that colour . I’m having major fall lust right now .

Thanks for the report! I’m holding off on ordering ‘cause I’ll be in the Big City the first week of September and hope to see the coat (Slouch) in person. Looks like it’s going to be stinkin’ hot through to the end of August.

Carla - I can see the Slouch working well for you with your height . It really is a lovely coat and is SO lightweight I was shocked . The SA mentioned having one herself and said she wore it all last winter riding transit to work and it was toasty warm . And it was a flippin cold winter too .

Such beautiful purchases. I live in the steamy south so I don't have much need for a long wool coat but that shirt jacket is right on target! And the colors! I am swooning over the Buenos Aires shade. Oh my.

nemo - for me it will be an outdoor piece in Sept and Oct. Say anywhere from 8C to 18C ? I’m sure there are lots of ways to wear it as an indoor piece if you work in a casual environment .

Yes - I don't particularly care about fabric blends for this sort of item. The hand-feel and appearance is what's more important. I bought one of these "shackets” in plaid late last fall , and didn't wear it much but it was also at the beginning of this trend and I didn't have any clear idea as to how I wanted to style it. I'm now super excited to wear both!

Exciting! True confession: I ordered the Stedman last week in camel hair, in the cocoa sand color (https://www.aritzia.com/us/en/.....79351.html), along with a different coat from Aritzia, the Wilfred long cocoon coat in rockwood green, a deep dark olive--one of my favorite colors (https://www.aritzia.com/us/en/.....olor=16979).

The Stedman arrived looking like it had been rolled up in a ball and sat on, so that was a bummer. Hopefully yours will arrive looking polished and smooth! The color and fabric were lovely (although the nap was sort of mottled looking in a few places, because of the way the coat had been handled) and the fit was maybe 95% perfect--I didn't like the cut of the sleeves and how they were fit into the shoulders, so from the back there was this wrinkling thing happening near my upper biceps, more noticeable because of the light color of the fabric (and probably related to my broad square shoulders, I'm guessing, though from the front the sizing looked right). Overall, the sizing was on the nose (I ordered the L and I typically wear a L or XL on top, depending on shoulder fit and sleeve length).

The Wilfred intrigued me because I love that color, and I love the high-necked collar. I ordered the XL to get ample sleeve length, and because the site said this coat was more fitted. It arrived looking smooth and well-cared for, and the fabric and color are beautiful. But it was too large through the body, from chest through hips (though the sleeve length was perfect!), and the pockets sort of gaped open in a way that displeased me.

My long wool coat quest continues! I am crossing my fingers that the Stedman works for you!

I *love* the shirt jacket and am tempted myself, but I already have one in fluffy off-white poly (cheap, from Urban Outfitters, purchases a few years ago) so I can't justify getting another one. But I am seduced by several of their plaids! Maybe I will ponder adding a second :)...
