Angie that sounds delicious, I'm joining you on the bench
Thinking about it more, I think for myself I default to an element of matchy because it provides grounding and harmony especially when other outfit elements are introducing chaos - disparate color, texture, shape, and pattern. So for example Jenn's cognac shoes and belt would be 'matchy' but grounding to the entire outfit, the same as Ginger's orchid that maybe works best with neutral accessories, or accessories that match or harmonize with eachother in some way if not the dress. So for example my wardrobe didn't start working together cohesively until I could make columns of color in a limited palette, and I had a set of accessories in black, white, navy and espresso brown that I could mix as needed.
I also count things like book-ending (matching your hair color) or lipstick that matches something you are wearing as another way to form a grounding 'matchy' duo or relationship between two parts of the whole picture that helps tie everything else together.
I also think tonal can work really well, and several deliberately jarring or unexpected elements can work as a more unified whole if they resonate with each other (those might be the most interesting outfits to my eye) - but it's challenging. I'm always searching for the chaos/harmony balance.
