Are You Still Wearing Velvet?

I just got a consignment velvet jacket with orange,charcoal grey, rust, burgundy, mustard and purple striped. The weight is right. Should I wear it now? Would you? I have a pair of Ponte burgundy pants that are very comfortable and full length.. I will add a photo when I have time to take one. DDIL and .little granddaughter are positive for Covid the rest of their family is negative. DDIL has symptoms like sore throat and fatigue, so DS has his hands full and is exausted. I know we will be asked tomorrow to take one or both kids for awhile, like half a day. I have a cold so have been keeping my distance. Scarey times as Covid is setting records here ( the Delta varient). There are also record numbers of deaths.

Regarding velvet:
If you mean is velvet "in style" - ALWAYS!!
If you mean is it the season for velvet - yes, at least in my opinion. If it is cold enough for sweaters, then it's the season for velvet. That is, it is not a "holiday" fabric.

This is the perfect time for velvet.

(The covid situation is so crazy. We shut our SF store for a few days because everyone was out. The butcher’s was shutdown for the same reason when I went grocery shopping Thursday. Omicron is on high octane.)

Can’t answer about velvet temperature wise, it’s summer here. I have a velvet duster coat I like to wear when the temperature is right, often it gets compliments.
So sorry about Covid. Surely you won’t be asked to care for a member of that family would you? You’re in a vulnerable group?

Am unclear if you mean if velvet is in style or in season, but think you should wear it either way. It’s soft and cozy!

Piling on with the unrequested medical advice, without JenniNZ’s expertise. If you feel you simply must take the kid who’s healthy, maybe you can have a “date” for a few hours where you do something outside your home—go sledding and get hot chocolate at a shop or something

I’m a bit stunned to hear Covid impacts—we have omicron and delta too, but not that much is shut down.

Joy - I’m so sorry to hear that you and your family have been ill. I wish you all a speedy and uneventful recovery. NJ has been crazy. It’s running through like wildfire. Fortunately curve is going down. But be careful, as I’m sure you are. It’s the cosmic game of dodge ball. And we all must stay alert looking for the next foxhole yo take shelter. Your jacket sounds beautiful!! Yes to velvet!! From the first cool down through cold spring. Casual or dressy. Even a cold summer night with a seasonably approximate outfit. Gorgeous luxe fabric!! Enjoy it!!

Joy, so sorry to hear about your family. I hope they recover quickly and without complications. I love how velvet looks on others and am certain you can wear your blazer whenever, since I think velvet is classic. If you are asking whether forum members still wear velvet, my personal answer is no. When I edited my closet over the holidays I removed two velvet items, a blazer and some pants. I sent them for consignment. They collected lint as I wore them and to my eye always looked shabby despite my effort to keep them pristine using a tape roll.

Thank you all for your wise advice. The velvet jacket is a wildcard and makes me happy so I will wear it today with a charcoal tube skirt and probably a black tee or bright pink silk tee.
Stag, I was thinking season with the velvet. I had a little for the holidays but ended up not having anywhere to wear it, even casually. The paper said Italy is requiring masks for everyone indoors and out, even when eating or drinking and the rest of Europe is following their lead. Several examples were given. So I am surprised that you are not more impacted yet. There is no place open to go for hot chocolate.

So many places have closed here. Now Macy’s. The biggest mall is half empty. Other places have closed due to the wild fires and damage. The medical complex and hospital where most of my doctors have offices and I have tests done was damaged and hopes to reopen sometime. My favorite Target store may open again in the summer. DS and family were very lucky. Most of their neighborhood is gone.

Jenni, yes we are in a vulnerable group. It is really scarey after knowing several who have had long Covid or died. DDIL is even more vulnerable with a compromised immune system and DGD is too young for vaccinations yet, so vulnerable. DGS has continued to test negative and has his first 2 vaccinations. He is also good about wearing his mask. DS, I don’t know but will probably get Covid at some point. He is fully vaccinated and not high risk, still mostly working from home.

Yes to velvet until end of Feb for me - after that it seems out of season. But on to more important things - I wish you didn't have to be exposed the way you are if your kids ask you to babysit, but I understand helping family is important. Please don't put yourself at risk.

Yes to velvet being both in style and in season. I love velvet! I bought a pair of velvet slim fit pants for my Christmas outfit this year.
I am sorry to hear about the Covid in your family. Hopefully they will recover quickly.

Thank you, Lisa and Katie. To the end of February sounds like a good velvet season to me. Today I’m wearing the velvet jacket with a charcoal tube skirt that needs something, grey stockings and purple suede flats. I see that I could use a small purple crossbody bag but am using a silver metallic instead. My top under the jacket is a shiny pink velvet short sleeve tee. If it were colder I can wear a pink cashmere hoodie or black sweater under the jacket. I may get an orange or rust turtle neck to wear with this jacket. It runs a little big so can be worn over bulky sweaters without feeling tight. We are being careful. My cold (sneezing and runny nose) is my excuse for keeping my distance and wearing my mask.

J Aileen, I’m not so sure about dates either. Now that I think about it, we get lots of snow and cold in March and even April. Freezes at night usually last until June. The rule is do not plant anything until after Memorial Day, so that extends the possible velvet season, especially if it is not black.

YES, I wear velvet. It's always in style. Classic! I wear it until the end of March. Sometimes April if it's cold. My velvet items are bright so it works into early Spring to my eye.

I am with Angie - I wear velvet as long as it is cool enough. And obviously be cautious, remember you will be no good to anyone if you get sick.

Thank you, Jaime. The kids are asking , we suspect, about our taking the little girl next week she has to isolate all of next week too. Maybe she will learn to keep her mask on. So far I am not ready to take on anyone who is supposed to be in quarantine.

I am so sorry to hear about your family, Joy. As others have said, please be careful and watch out for yourself! One cannot be too careful with the newest, highly contagious variant.

As for velvet, LOVE it. I will wear it from fall until it starts to feel like spring. I stop wearing it in the spring, not because it is necessarily out of season, but rather because I want to wear things that are lighter and brighter in anticipation of nice weather. It is a winter classic and I love both the look and feel of it.

Echo, thank you for sharing your wisdom. I plan to continue to wear velvet as long as it feels right. I con see pairing my new velvet jacket with a sleeveless orange or black or grey dress warmer weather and be careful ( homebound) because of all the Covid variants the next few weeks.

Wear your velvet, it's not just for the holiday season as otherwise in Australia, we would never wear it. Your velvet jacket sounds lovely and wearing it will hopefully lift your spirits. I hope you (and those around you) recover quickly and know that it is OK to say no to babysitting requests.

Thank you, Bijou. DS requested that I have a COVID test and I had one with results coming within the next couple of days. DDIL feels she can not care for DGD who is supposed to be quarantined this week. My stance is that I never had a choice. Relatives were too far away and had there own problems .I feel a bit resentful but want to help if I can. I do not feel this help should endanger our lives. It is not worth that to me. I am not ready to die yet or to endure kidney dialysis for the rest of my life or to lose DH to a stoke or something. Am I being mean?

Joy - you are not being mean! This is a real, difficult conflict for many people.

I'm immune compromised. In November, my sister said she'd like to come visit in January (a cross-country flight). I told her no - and this was before we'd heard of Omicron.

I'm sorry I can only offer empathy, but no good advice. I hope there will be some way of working this out for your family.

I definitely don’t think you are being mean. I would say with your insulin dependent diabetes ( which you have told us about) you would be at the top of the list of the medically vulnerable. The granddaughter actually has Covid, is that right? So the mother just needs to suck it up and care for her own child, to my way of thinking, not put you and your husband at risk.
I do understand that family arguments are not pleasant, if you take a stand.

Very hard on you Joy - what a tricky position to be in. Can you make a meal to drop off contactless as a way of helping? I have been sick and caring for sick kids - the tv comes into its own.

Thank you all. DH wants us to help and has already volunteered to go to their place. I am not happy about that. I will tell him I want him to keep masked up and wash his hands all the time. I will disinfect door pulls and faucets and such at home for days.I have offered to bring games, books, crafts for the kids and will also offer meals. Part of the problem is that the little girl wants constant attention and someone with her all the time. The boy is better but there is competition for attention so he gets demanding too and wants his share. They are better here without parents.

I got a Covid test yesterday and hope to get results in the next couple of days. I do not think I have it, but my cough makes people wonder
if I have it, that could be a game changer. Jenni, you are right. We are in the first group to get shots and such.

Joy, the velvet jacket sounds beautiful and a great smart find. I'd wear it in the autumn and winter.

As for the request from your family, I think you are not selfish at all. I'd understand to baby sit for a couple of hours or bring in some ready meals but it should be something that you feel confortable in doing, not forced into.
