Are you travelling or planning any trips?

This weekend I pulled out the file of information related to the 2020 UK trip that got cancelled, and reviewed the itinerary and hotel/B&B information. I’m going to keep the information close at hand, and if all goes well in the coming weeks, see if I can’t plan something for later this year. Later, I ordered an item that has been tagged by reviewers as ‘a great travel piece’ although it has applications for my day to day activities vs being only a travel item

Then I wake up to two forum posts for items related to travel!

Have you started to travel for enjoyment? Are you planning any trips for 2022 and going forward? Are you staying on the continent where you live, or considering a trip abroad?

Travel for enjoyment? What’s that? We travel to see family, not for pleasure, hahaha.

Between accepted student sessions in the Spring and my son starting college in the fall, I hope we can squeeze in a bike trip on the Mediterranean and a birthday trip to Sicily.

We’re planning on going to Alaska this summer, to one of the Aleutian Islands. So, the same continent, but just barely. My husband booked it last week. I need to think about warm, waterproof things. This will be the opposite of the Arizona trip we took last August. I wear travel things every day. I’m wearing a pair of my Columbia every day pants right now.

I finally visited my elderly mother in the SF Bay Area this past weekend. We were unable to go at Christmas. Heavy snow caused the interstate to stay closed for days. Then omicron hit, and her retirement home made visiting impossible. They had just loosened up, and the weather was nice, so I zoomed down there before they changed their minds. We ran errands in the beautiful warm spring weather, and I fixed minor computer/printer problems. We had nice get togethers with her friends. I came home and woke the next morning to snow.

ETA: The Aleutians might not be part of North America. I don’t know. Does anyone know?

Dress warmly and layer. Don’t forget a good insect repellent. I was once told that July is summer in Alaska, June is Spring and August is Fall. We went in August and it was like late fall going into winter. Wear things to climb on glaciers and be ready for wind. A lot of things involve the water and boats…whale watching, eagles, “greatest catch” tour in American Indian waters. .I wore all my clothes with me at once a few times and was thankful for warm hats, scarves, and gloves plus hoods on puffer coats.

We are going to the Mayan Riviera and I am tentatively excited about it. We'll be travelling with DHs twin and his family - potentially the last family trip with all 8 of us for a while, as our niece will go to uni next year so the kids won't have overlapping vacations anymore.

The travel rules are a bit silly with the testing etc., and I'm nervous about being quarantined in Mexico. But our travel agent assures us the resort guarantees the same accommodations if quarantined (obviously just room service) and that the few clients she has that did get Covid were on their way again before long. It's nerve-wracking, but I'm conscious of the closing window of time to do these things with my 'babies' (teens!) so ... fingers crossed and hope for the best!

JAileen, looks like the Aleutians are considered part of Alaska, so NA seems to be right!

We were hoping to get to Australia to visit DHs family this summer, but I don't think it's in the cards ... so something to hopefully plan for 2023 *fingers and toes crossed*

I haven’t yet booked our flight, but we plan to go to Chicago to see our daughter at the end of April and return after Mother’s Day. There’s a unit in her building that we can rent for up to a week so that should be convenient.

DH’s health is rather fragile (he got his 2nd booster last week!!!) and we’ve visited CHI in the past so I don’t feel compelled to rush around and do much. I need Covid rates to go down more before I risk typical vacation activities.

I hope to take a small tript in the fall, assuming Covid is quiet. And maybe a bigger trip later. I decided that I want to start making tentative plans, so that I have something to look forward to.

We have two family weddings coming up this spring and summer, all within (reasonable driving distance). So mini-vacations? Not sure yet if we will go. One is in a state with strict vax rules and good compliance. The other is not

We will probably do a beach vacation again this year. It’s an easy trip for us and we navigated it successfully last year, so we know the potential pitfalls should COVID complicate things (outdoor dining vs. indoor, avoiding crowds).

Can’t believe we are still having to be cautious two years later but here we are…

Only road trips to Quebec - just returned from a chalet in the Laurentians, considering a train trip to Montreal over March break as my daughter graduating HS next year is interested in McGill, and possibly a summer trip to Charlevoix as friends are renting a cottage there.
I’m not quite ready for bigger plans. Our big Paris trip planned for summer 2020 can’t be rescheduled anyway as my oldest daughter will be working at her sleep away camp all summer this summer and next, which also means the end of our summer cottage family holidays. Of course I have mixed feelings about the end of an era, but accept that in future my role will be more to help finance her travel opportunities - and I hope there are some, to help make up for some of the school trips, school exchange opportunities etc that have been missed due to Covid.

We had planned a trip to London for fall of 2020, of course that didn't happen. So now we are hoping it is on for this fall. We have never been there so I am super excited.

Hubby and I did take a cruise last month. We booked it when Covid was quiet and then Omicrom hit so we were worried. But everyone on board had to be vaccinated and test negative before boarding, so we decided to keep with the plans and go. It ended up feeling very safe. Masks were worn when walking around the ship and it was also only at about a third capacity so was never crowded. It was a fabulous break from our Michigan winter.

Just came back from mini vacation at Oahu - 6 days. Masks were still the norm and vaccination cards ( or photos, plus ID cards ) were needed for restaurants' inside sitting. It was mostly botanical gardens, waterfalls with a bit of beach/swimming on the side. Perfect weather and less crowded places for February month.
I was planning the trip to Moscow, Russia to see my mom and brother before coronavirus started but that still not happening - waiting for the fall to see how things will be going ( still don't feel safe traveling there ).

planning a number of trips to see my mom in Boston. and planning a trip to NYC for mother's day, including a Broadway show. not sure how i feel about that, but will see. have a trip planned to the Berkshires in western Mass for July. and a week at the beach in August.
i'm not ready to travel too far and i'm not ready to travel overseas, but i tend to be very pessemaic and always take the conservative route

We're planning a Spring Break trip to Moab, Utah which we can drive to. There are two national parks and one state park close by so we'll be doing lots of outdoor activities like hiking. We have a family trip (grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins) scheduled for this summer in Puerto Penasco, Mexico. We always rent a big house on the beach. Since we drive we don't have to deal with Covid testing requirements. Just the usual masking and social distancing.

It was so crushing to cancel our Israel trip for the 2nd time (should be there right now.... originally was scheduled for November - Delta killed that plan, and Omicron killed the Feb reschedule), after planning every one of the 14 days, that I've kind of lost my travel mojo. Nothing on the horizon except driving to Pittsburgh, Norfolk, and Boston from DC over the next months.

No. The pandemic is still here--and in many other areas. I care (almost 24/7) for my old parents and try to protect them as much as possible, so I am very careful and don't meet friends in person, only online. I hope to be able to meet local friends later in 2022. However, no plans are made for travels to other parts of the country or to any other countries.

You people are giving me pause. The people we are most likely to travel to see do have delicate immune systems, whether due to age or to cancer. Trying to rethink the Mediterranean trips. Does it really matter, though, as long as there are a couple weeks between those trips and seeing those people? The other issue, of course, is that they are across the ocean, so there is no seeing them without travel. Of course everyone is masked when we travel, and we keep masks on in airports/train stations.

The DS’s are in school - one in a hybrid program and working part time, and one in a full placement rotation living on campus and home on weekends. That, and bridge night once a week (masked and vaxed with other seniors) is the extent of my risk tolerance atm.

My mother just spent a week with us, and travelled 4 and 1/2 hours on a train wearing a mask. She had a (negative) Covid test the day before, from when she visited her 95 yo husband (not my father) in a care home. I think she enjoyed the train ride as much as the visit! She had to show proof of vaccination to get on the train. I’ll probably travel to check on her once the snow is done, ‘cause I don’t fancy winter driving. She is at the top of the list for the assisted living place she wants to go to, and should know the move in date sometime next month!

At my mother’s retirement home, everyone is required to be vaccinated they also check your temperature. They keep track of you in a machine by a cell phone number. I had given it to them in November. This time, I couldn’t remember it. There was a line of people forming behind me. I told them to go ahead while I texted my husband for my number. One kind man in line told me to call him and then he could tell me my number. Afterward I taped my number on the back of my phone. Just now, I’ve put it in notes in contacts. Please, dear tech people, Millenials, and Gen Xers: I can remember my childhood home phone number, but I cannot remember my cell phone number!

JAileen, we get temp SIM cards when we go to the US, and usually have new numbers. Idk if you have an iphone, but if you do, you can go to Settings and then the first entry is “Name, Phone numbers, Email”. Click on it to see any of that info. Storing your number in contacts is a good workaround.

Carla, that second piece—what do you do in daily life—is important too. Once we get to wherever we are going, my son and I are very safe—no clubs, non-contact sports (lifting & swimming, no basketball) only, no one is going to work, we don’t have people over. We go for walks and on bike rides, but not in congested areas.

Helena - I went to the Riviera Maya in November and the protocols were pretty navigable. My only regret is that I wasted an hour waiting in line for testing to return home, rather than bringing the proctored rapid tests to return to the US (not sure what your options for Canada are). There was no masking inside for the most part. It was "enforced," but people inside in the common areas of the resort were mostly eating or drinking, so just keep that in mind if that will be a comfort issue. People like to pretend covid disappears while we are eating

I am resurrecting my Sept 2021 trip to Greece that was canceled due to life stuff. Our 10th anniversary is in May, so that seems a good time. We also will visit family in Maine next month, do our usual summer trip to the summer house in Michigan, and maybe do an amusement park trip (Dollywood) in Sept. If all goes well! I also have to go back home at least a couple of times for stuff related to my late mom, so that's less fun.

Mr. ND and I were in San Diego a few weeks ago for his 70th birthday. It was a marvelous, but all too short vacation. Our first pleasure trip since January 2020. Interestingly, it was also the first time I ever purchased trip insurance because I was so worried about the Omnicron variant and its potential impact. I didn't even do that on my 2010 trip to France when an active volcano in Iceland and a potential strike by British Airways employees could have completely sidetracked everything.

SF, Kkards, thank you. First, the taped-on number was on the phone, inside the cover. Second, I now realize that if I click on “my card” at the top of contacts, everything is available. On my old phone, my number was there, just under my name. I was already a contact, but no number was visible. So that’s where I put my number, in notes on my own contact. I never needed to tape my number at all.

The last two years my only travel has been domestic. Whilst NZ has done a great job of minimising COVID sickness and deaths, we have had border restrictions that made travelling challenging (quarantine required at a cost and a shortage of spaces).

We are now mid Omicron - and border restrictions are changing (everyone has an opinion on this of course)

I have a couple of local trips planned and am hoping to get to the US and Canada soon-ish to see family and friends (and tick off my bucket list - New York). By soon-ish I mean within a year.

I forgot to mention that my aunts’ ashes still need to be scattered in the Puget Sound/beyond; at least one but maybe both died pre-Covid. The tide needs to be right plus my cousin in Canada, the family matriarch if there is one, needs to be able to cross the border both ways without quarantine. I also have a cousin whose memorial service I would like to attend; that would be in Seattle. It would be nice if I could do both on one trip, but since they are opposite sides of my family the best I can hope for is that they don’t conflict.

We are planning a week-long road trip to see my in-laws . Unfortunately, it’s scheduled during a critical product release at work that I really *should* be available for…. The travel dates aren’t flexible, we have no friends living near to help care for our cat and frog, and hubs doesn’t want anyone we don’t know coming over.

So that, plus outstanding trip prep, covid/lack of masks where we are going, and the current state of the world, all has me super stressed out… but hey — we get to get away
