Are waterfall cardigans too dated? (pic)

They aren't trendy, but they are still showing up in a lot of stores. Not even dated type stores...saw ones today in Loft and in Saks.

I've been thinking it was time to replace mine but I'm not sure...it is so useful. I'm not sure I like the look of the long "boyfriend's grandpa" ones! I might like the cocoon type if I could find the right one.

So...rulings on mine, and suggestions for its replacement are welcome!

Hmmm, I thought waterfall ones were on trend again as part of the oversized look.

Okay, I reread Nagie's post today and the link to current cardis.

Waterfall are not on the list per se. Tunic length with some volume. Art flounces that drape like a waterfall.

I would check out today's post and the link to current styles.

I would keep the one you have, though, until you find the right replacement.

There seems to be a lot of variations on the waterfall style cardigan. Some earlier versions can IMHO look a tad frumpy bit generally I think they look great. I like yours. I think you need to consider the overall outfit not just the cardigan

Hmmm....I didn't consider at all what I put it on with for the picture, just wanted to show it! It is still mid-80s here, no cardigans in sight!

I do tend to put it on over anything though, later in the Fall if I'm chilly. I don't really think of it as an important part of an outfit, just as a bit of warmth when needed.

I think they are fine to wear. Often I wear mine as I add a layer as the day cools. I like this one actually, a nice length.

I am on the fence with these. I have one in my closet I haven't worn in a couple of years now, and every time I consider wearing it and put it on, I take it off again. They are in pretty much every store and at every price range now except for high-end and designer, which suggests it's not a fashion forward look anymore. Now that I've typed this, I think I am going to put mine into the donate bag

I say yes to Aida's verdict... And you need to decide if this is on your personal classics list. I have some personal classics: Bettye muller winkle picker sling backs with the long exaggerated toe; bronze flatforms I bought just under the wall in Lucca; a beautiful sueded mermaid midi skirt in a color I love... I might push those things to the back of my closet for a few years but this ain't my first rodeo & I know they are likely to cycle back. But this approach really only works for pieces that are terrific quality and are truly beloved. I want to keep up with trends and silhouettes, but there is a small contrary streak that doesn't like to look cookie cutter 'current' day in and day out. Every now and again I enjoy busting out something old with some good memories and a little patina. I think your cardi looks like a nice example of that genre. Maybe it's just a lounge sweater or an office sweater this year if you still enjoy it. I have a snug black cashmere cardigan that is in a similar limbo.

I hope they're not, since I have a few and really like the shape.

I have a feeling Aida's take is probably about right, so I'll keep wearing the ones I have but maybe lean toward other styles for new cardigan purchases.

I hope not, I just bought another. I think wearing them with skinny bottoms and great accessories will help keep the look current. I just love the versatility and comfort and the silhouette with skinny or straight bottoms!

Thanks for this thread! You've reminded me that I have a purple ombre cascading cardigan in my closet. I loved it two or three years ago, and perhaps it's time to break it out again.

I like the soft drapes on yours, Peri. There was one featured in NAS this year that made Angie's picks. So I don't think they're out of style. (What Aida says.)

The verdict is in...not fashion forward but still in style enough to be okay.

Hey, that's all I aspire to!! Good enough for me, I will keep wearing mine until I find a newer style I can't live without!

What Aida said. Borderline dated. A little too ruffle-y on the collar. Not bad though. Not fashionable, but certainly not a faux pas. If you love it - wear it.
